Nationalists vs AI ?

War in Spain 1936-39 is the first in a new wargame series, using a new Land-Sea-Air engine inspired by War in the Pacific - Admiral’s Edition. Gameplay and realism are improved by TRUE AI and a detailed Logistics systems. A hyper detailed OOB reaches down to battalion and company level. A beautiful, hand drawn, 5 nautical mile per hex map massively increases player immersion.

Nationalists vs AI ?

Post by 39battalion »

This looks to be a very interesting game. Full credit to the devs for creating such a detailed take on a complicated war.

However my reading of the scenario descriptions is that all 10 of the scenarios, including the campaign game, are recommended as being best played as the Republicans if playing against the AI.

Is this correct ? If so, that is disappointing as it limits player choice and does not allow the player to experience both sides of the war.

That's not the case. The tutorial (scenario 07) is recommended to be played as a Republican (as are the other two Mallorca scenarios).
The Zaragoza and Madrid scenarios are also good for the Republican side. Teruel is very evenly matched. The main campaign can be won as a Republican. Only the northern and Ebro scenarios might be difficult, especially the northern one, where survival is the Republican player's objective.

Hmm, it seems to me that my colleague Piteas confirms this (with the exception of SCN Norte).
The SCN for the nationalists were created just as objectively as for the republic.

If you really bring Germans and Italians into the main SCN (which the AI usually doesn't do), then the game for the nationalists is very impressive and of high quality. ;)

Thank you Dali101 and Piteas.

So it seems that it is possible to play a reasonable game as the Nationalists vs the AI in the main campaign, even though the scenario is listed as " Scen01 Great Campaign Republican". And also the Northern scenario, even though it is listed as "Scen03 Republican".

But the other 8 scenarios are designed to be played as Repubicans vs the AI.

The other scenarios, even the Mallorcas, are beatable by a human nationalist player.

Some recent changes/fixes that I have noticed have made it harder to manipulate things. So less cheating from me and a more difficult opponent, maybe I will start over soon . . .

Thank you Piteas.

I now see that all the scenarios, with the exception of the tutorial, are suitable for play against the AI as either Nationalists or Republicans.

My apologies for my earlier confusion, but I had been reading the scenario descriptions for games with the Nationalists AI button selected. No wonder all of the descriptions were labelled "Republican" ! Once I selected the Republican AI button all of the scenario descriptions were labelled as "Nationalists" So that was my dumb mistake

So thanks to the devs for creating a deep and very interesting game which can be played against the AI as either side.
