What version of AE are you using?

Post by zebrazwo »

I have listed the latest versions and only allowed 1 choice, so I hope you select the version you play most often.

Of course, feel free to add all the comments you want, like map version, mods used etc.

The reason for this is a few posts in the 28 bugs topic, where some seem to recommend using 26 and others say 28 runs fine.

2 installations.

1128 latest and 1127 latest. Latter for DaBabes and map mods.

As I posted elsewhere 28 is a beta meant for testing with unkown bug.
26 has known bug so you get no surprise.

I have both installed, playing 26 and testing 28 so voted other.

IM0 27 is rubbish, strong words I know but it's how I feel about it.

I think that's what we need to hear, some honest opinions on the state of the various releases. For a very long time I was running the 27 exe because it solves to naval support issue. And 28 looked pretty bad.

So only the 27 exe then?

The full release 1127 was horrible, with useless off-map bases and really restricted supply in USA etc.

Thus, I just used michaelm's unofficial 1127 exe on top of 1126.

28 exe copied into a way older installation using modded scen and map files. Seems to work just fine.

General impression is the last betas 27 and 28 have had solid .exe files but the map and scenarios have been challenging, borked, error prone, "interesting" in a not interesting way.

For further inspiration, see Monty Python and the parrot.

So, exe and map/scenarios are separate things in general. There are apparently two 1127 updates. The 1127.2 that MichaelM released in a thread has no map, no scenario, and works with the original map/scenarios just fine.

What PaxMondo said.

Exe-file doesn't care about map. AI scripts and pwhex-files do and they need to be compatible with map. And vise versa.

I know the differences which is the reason I commented on them separately.

Not at my computer right now, but if memory serves me, the MichaelM standalone exe version 27 and the exe with the beta 27 (crazy map changes, nerfed supply etc) are the same, if you read the changelog.

Again I can't check, so I could be wrong.

The point was the 27 and 28 exe files have gotten solid approval from users - the remaining parts of the betas, maps and scenarios, have not been a big hit, and have been proven to contain a bunch of errors.

I would only point out that there are a number of differences between the two exe's.
27 was like the 100 or so releases before it, just crushing bugs. The biggest was the naval base 0(0) bug. Upgrading to 27.2 is a no-brainer.

28 introduces a number of intentional changes to the gameplay as I read the changelog.

I started to use the draft “finalized” grand campaign scenario 1 and the draft “final” version of the game, version 11.27.2 which was the June 2022 beta as updated in September of 2022. I used Andrew Brown’s most recent map, which was an extended map with additional bases, and which didn’t match Andy Mac’s revised scenarios.

I started in March/April of 2023 and after a hiatus of about 2 months I got going on it in earnest in late July. The game crashed on September 2, 2023 and was unsalvable. I concluded that there were errors in the underlying saves going back to early-on that finally caused it to collapse, particularly the issues with the extended map, the new bases and some of the units in the updated order of battle.

After the crash, and in anticipation of the final, final, and they mean really final version, I restarted the game using the same folder as the previous game and even the same first turn in November 2023.

For whatever reason, and probably because I didn’t make the errors with moving off map naval units to and from the new off map bases, (you just need to be careful), I have only had one problem with a corrupted save over the past year and half. That corrupted save has affected the use of Tracker for naval units (I have started Tracker over 9 times now as it fills up – that isn’t the problem) but not, from my experience, the game itself.

I did experience the “supply” problem, I think it was early 1943. Since I am playing against the computer, I just went into editor and changed the setting for some bases, I don’t remember which, probably SD, SF and EUSA, to match an earlier version of the game.

It is presently 2/44, auto victory is in the past. Andy’s AI is being a pest in China and in the sea lanes between CONUS and Pearl. I am wondering when the Kamikazes will show up in earnest, only 1 attack so far. (What would a 4 X 40mm Oerlikon do to a Shahed drone - but then a ship moving at 30 Kn may be is easier to defend than a whole country). That and needing to learn better how to mount an Amph attack against a heavily fortified base is why I have continued playing while awaiting the final . . .

Just for readers who may not be steeped in WWII military weapons, I will point out that the Oerlikon company made or licensed 20mm guns and Bofors made or licensed the 40mm guns for the Allies.
As for drones, they are much smaller than an aircraft and quite maneuverable. I am not sure how drones dodge AA Missiles aimed at them but they must have some way of detecting threats. And the Allied AA guns would have to have the proximity fuse to really be able to put junk in front of the drone.
