How do I attack subs with destroyers and /or aircraft carriers?

Can subs be attacked with destroyers if they are not near a coast?

If destroyers cannot attack subs then how do I use them? Do I place them on the convoy lines hexes or next to the convoy lines hexes?

Can subs be attacked with carriers at all?

It seems to me subs can only be attacked by land based aircraft.

You can attack sub with CV and DDs only of the sub is in a coastal hex or adjacent to a costal hex. But you can always attack with land bases air units (weather permitting).

You can place DDs and CV on a convoy lane and they will provide a small bonus to the lane protection up to 24 hexes IIRC (if escorts are assigned).

Best use of DDs is usually to escort other ships and transports just in case subs show up.
