Manila 1898

Post by martinworsey »

This scenario is based on the historical campaign but not the historical battle.

The Spanish initially planned to fight at Subic Bay but this plan was abandoned due to Castilla breaking down and the absence of coastal defences. I assume these events do not happen and this is where the battle takes place.

Historically the Spanish anchored their ships and intended to support them with coastal artillery (which was actually sighted out of range).

Whilst I think some of the ships involved are interesting, this is not a balanced scenario; the best I have managed for the Spanish is 2 small ships sunk. This is a kind of victory insofar as the Americans used a lot of ammunition and may have had difficulty replenishing it. I find playing the American side results in a massacre (although this appears realistic).

The Spanish shore defence should be located on Isla Grande but this is not present on the map, so I improvised.

Neat scenario. Significant victory first time through, although not as total as the real event at Cavite. (Hard to be so complete with the Spanish on the open water and able to maneuver.) Dewey got his squadron between the Spanish and the entrance to Subic Bay early, and after that it was a running fight, that eventually ended up at very close quarters. (BALTIMORE even rammed REINA CRISTINA late in the action, although Captain Dyer insists that the contact was unintentional.)

Good times, although not for Rear Admiral Montojo.
