Back and Better THan Ever Vettim 89(A) vs Greasylake(J)

Post by vettim89 »

My old gamming buddy Larry (Greasylake) has consented for a third game. Previously we played a whole game of WitP using the Big B mod which saw my offensive moving up through the East Indies. Then we played a Da Big Babes scenario of AE.

We are going back to roots and playing B Mod - AE for this game. On to the action.

Magazine explodes on BB Oklahoma
I only lost the Oklahoma but the damage while less severe was more broad. Never saw so many attacks against CA/CL and the smaller stuff. I sent anything under 10k tons into the shipyard before I start on the BBs. His air losses were atrociously small. The RNG gives, the RNG takes away

Then this happened:
Morning Air attack on TF, near Singapore at 50,84

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid detected at 26 NM, estimated altitude 17,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 8 minutes

Japanese aircraft

Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Type 91 Torpedo
2 x G3M2 Nell bombing from 23000 feet *

PoW is in the dockyard in Singapore. My concern is that Larry will Port attack it into oblivion. I though about diverting her to another port but I fear the area around Singapore is infested with submarines. Very few escorts available. Maybe if the Hong Kong DDs survive I will use them to move her. Problem is I will have to move her off map or all the way to the WCUSA to find another yard capable of fitting her ample bottom into.

I will cover my future plans as they develop but for now its mostly scattering roaches after some one turn on the lights.

We have a House Rule that Force Z must sortie. Well it went without PoW but here is the result. At least she died trying.
Day Time Surface Combat, near Kota Bharu at 51,75, Range 24,000 Yards

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
Walrus II: 1 destroyed

Japanese Ships
BB Kongo
BB Haruna, Shell hits 21, heavy fires, heavy damage
CA Takao, Shell hits 1
CA Atago, Shell hits 5, heavy fires
CL Jintsu
DD Asashio, Shell hits 1
DD Oshio, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Michishio, Shell hits 2
DD Arashio
DD Akatsuki, Shell hits 3, on fire
DD Hibiki, Shell hits 2

Allied Ships
BC Repulse, Shell hits 61, and is sunk
CL Mauritius, Shell hits 3
DD Vampire, Shell hits 2
DD Tenedos, Shell hits 16, and is sunk
DD Electra, Shell hits 5, on fire
An xAK and a xAP are sunk by submarines south of Singapore. AV Langley is sunk by a sub near Palawan. Two PTs hit mines at sink at Bataan. Makin Island is now owned by the Japanese.

No port attack at Singapore today. In fact no Netties attack anything in the South China Sea or Strait of Malacca - AB socked in by weather?

I changed my mind and PoW will be moved as soon as her minor flood is pumped out.

Only lost one ship today - an x AK near Iba (retreating from Hong Kong)

Aparri falls, Tarawa falls , Kota Baru falls. Calayan is occupied by the Japanese

Larry sends only a single SNLF unit to invade Wake. They got beaten up quite badly.
Ground combat at Wake Island (136,98)

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 1477 troops, 19 guns, 1 vehicles, Assault Value = 58

Defending force 1143 troops, 27 guns, 10 vehicles, Assault Value = 26

Japanese adjusted assault: 0

Allied adjusted defense: 20

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 99 (fort level 1)

Combat modifiers
Defender: fatigue(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+), leaders(-), supply(-)

Japanese ground losses:
839 casualties reported
Squads: 19 destroyed, 23 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 5 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 17 (4 destroyed, 13 disabled)
Vehicles lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)
I decided to do a Shock Attack next turn. Yes I know it will chew up my units but if I damage the SNLF enough, he will be forced to add more units.

KB is taking its time getting out of the area. Not sure is Larry has just set it to cruise speed or if he is hoping he might catch some stray shipping.

Larry let slip that BB Kongo sank after her encounter with Repulse; so, all was not in vain :D

Imperial Japanese forces arrived at Legaspi, Miri and Hong Kong. First attack at Hong Kong reduces fortifications to 2.

Lost an xAP south of Singapore, an xAK in the Molucca Strait, and an xAKL at Manilla. Once again several of Larry's bombing runs came without escorts leading to the loss (well, claims) of 11 G4M and 5 G3M. My B-17s finally flew today and hit....nothing!

So KB has split. Part is still lurking around the HI. Wondering of Larry is trying to catch an attempt at a Wake Island relief. My two CVTF depart PH to the East. Even if it is only three CVs present I don't think my units are up for the task (especially with VF-2 still hosting Buffaloes). Unfortunately most of my bombers on Oahu are still recovering from the attack on 7 December. Subs are redeployed to try for an intercept. Not having high hopes. KB's presence does inhibit any plans I have to resupply my central Pacific outposts.

Well it starts. Two US fleet boats find targets and dent the hulls of their prey. I lost another xAK north of Billiton. A CM is sunk just SE of Singapore - nooooooo!. AS Holland absorbs two torpedoes and is now 150 NM North of Billiton likely not going to make it. Larry seems to be concentrating his subs between Singapore and Batavia. No subs spotted near the HI or the WCUSA.

Japanese forces arrive at Guam. Miri falls. Tried to set my B-17s to city attack but the game doesn't seem to want to allow it. Maybe because the because just changed hands?

The IJN carriers drifted west a little and are now about 300 nm south of Midway. Curiously there is a third TF 200 nm SE of the carriers. Perhaps Johnston Island is due for an attack?

Lastly Netties continue to fly unescorted. The claims for today are ridiculous. I am taking them with a grain of salt

SS Sargo had the first success for the Silent Service torpedoing an IJN xAK off CRB. Filipino PT try again at Legaspi and lose one of their own for no hits. Georgetown was plastered by escorted Sallies today and now sits at Runway 61/service 46. Don't think I am getting the damaged a/c out of there. Saved what I could.

Legaspi is now Japanese controlled. Hong Kong survived another Direct Attack. with no damage to the forts

Guam Falls. Masbate is occupied. Only a bombardment attack at Hong Kong today.

The portion of KB still in the central Pacific is now 500 nm east of Wake. I think I am right in the purpose was to block any attempt to reinforce Wake.

The PoW TF evaded a submarine attack south of Singapore without revealing that the BB was in the TF. There is another sub near Billiton that they will have to evade before the TF arrives at Batavia. Hears hoping

Running turns pretty hard this weekend.

Larry switched to sweeping the airbases in central Luzon these last two turns. I am down to 20 flyable P-40E. Everything else is gone. The carnage in the Sulu Sea intensifies. I have lost 3 PG, 14 xAKL and 2 xAK over the past two turns. Nothing can be done. A Dutch sub scored the first kill of the campaign taking down an xAK off CRB.

Catanduanes is occupied by the Japanese. Naga fell to the IJA. IJN forces are dropping off troops at Singkawang
Ground combat at Singkawang (56,88)

Allied Bombardment attack

So he brought air support. Expect Fighters there soon. Oh these forces are escorted by a TF containing BBs so no hope of interfering with Dutch surface forces

A BB TF Bombard Kuantan on the 15th. Was expecting a invasion but none developed.

I have been mostly posting what Larry is up to in this AAR. (Product of the times)

Here are a few things I am up to:

Gurkhas have arrived at Rangoon. Also running supply into that port and pulling fuel out on the return trips.

The 47th construction REG has departed SF for not-Pago Pago. They will go to a nearby base that has a port of 1(2). This will be my initial mid ocean refueling point.

Supplies are flowing to PM and collecting the coys of the New Guinea BTN via airlift at PM

I am trying to sneak a small AMPH TF into Rabaul to pull at least the lark BTN

Central Pacific bases are turning yellow so small TFs are heading for supply runs.

This mod allows KNIL units to be moved, I.e. they are not restricted. The CD at Ambon is pretty effective so I picked up some stray BTNs and am moving them there. Yes this leaves some bases naked but these units were not going to hold off an assault by themselves. AV strength at Ambon is now 100 and will climb higher as more units are inbound.
vettim89: AS strength at Ambon is now 100 ...
What did you mean by AS? If you are talking about Air Support, AS is the usual abbreviation. But if you meant your ground combat power, AV for Assault Value is the usual abbreviation. The Land Combat Report generated by the game uses AV too.
And of course you must include some context if you mean AS as the ship type Auxiliary, Submarine or AV as Auxiliary, Aviation (tenders).
We have quite a few new players for this game so I am not so much trying to be critical as I want to be helpful to them as they read AARs. :)

If PoW has more than 50 Sys damage, it is a good idea to repair below that number before starting her for Cape Town. That means not putting her in drydock unless the Flt damage is higher than the Sys damage.

If you do decide to try repairing her in Colombo, you will need lots of fighters and bombers to hold off any possible KB raid and subs, mines, PT/MTBs, and surface ships to keep the IJN from bombarding. Those US S-boat subs could be useful here - reliable MK 10 torps but weed out the poor captains.
