National Morale for the UK & USA

Post by petedalby »

The NM for the Allies seems quite fragile.

Russia has a few opportunities to improve its NM - Winter x 2, Allied landings in France & Italy. As does China if it retakes territory from Japan.

I'm struggling to identify many opportunities for the UK & USA though. What am I missing? Any thoughts / suggestions would be most welcome please.

Thanks

Opportunities are very limited. You probably know these ones already:

1. Some Allied players invade fairly random countries like Yemen for a small boost. I suspect the boost is temporary so it is not an overall NM increase.

2. In naval engagements players let the French fleet make inroads (suicide) and then use the UK fleet to finish off opponents (usually Italian but sometimes German). For cruisers and above there is a big NM bonus.

3. Retake any of the following as a priority, especially Singapore (since v1.12):

- The UK, USA and India will now lose 50 National Morale points per turn that Batavia is occupied by the Axis.
- The UK, USA and India will now lose 50 National Morale points per turn that Sydney is occupied by the Axis.
- The UK, USA and India will now lose 50 National Morale points per turn that Wellington is occupied by the Axis.
- The UK and India will now lose 50 National Morale points per turn that Singapore is occupied by the Axis.
- The UK and USA will now lose 50 National Morale points per turn that Calcutta is occupied by the Axis, while India will lose 75.

4. Investment in Productivity research tends to reduce NM losses from unit losses.

5. Having new Allies is supposed to boost NM although I have never seen the maths for this.

No magic bullets sorry.

1 = not just a boost, but also a penalty on enemy morale. But yeah, it does not influence national morale.

I agree that there are not that many options. For UK and USA, it's mainly damage control. Don't lose the pacific islands for too long. Don't lose the fleet. And if you wanna boost morale, kill the axis fleets is a good start.

The main way to boost morale is to knock out a major axis power. Japan is 10k I think, Germany too. Usually this just means that you won the game. But as Pete knows all too well now, not always.

Other than that, I agree that the UK and USA could actually do with a few more ways to restore national morale.

Thanks for the replies guys.

When Japan surrendered I seemed to get a small boost but it didn't seem massive. China ended with the highest NM at 106%. Germany was at 99%. Poor old UK was at 4%.

Retaking conquered countries seemed to have no beneficial impact. Norway, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Indo-China, DEI, Philippines, Malaya etc, etc.

Surely it should in the same way China NM is boosted when taking back its territory?

Manila is NM loss over time as well. US loses some per turn in 1943. And then even more in 1944. And it stacks.

I dont recall what the exact numbers are, but its like
-50 per turn in 1943.
-100 per turn in 1944.
So its really 150 / turn in 1944

Guadalcanal, Guam, Suva, and Pago Pago are NM dmg over time as well.

You can dmg enemy NM (slightly) by strat bombing and convoy raiding.

National Morale and the fact that it really only goes down is a pet peeve of mine that goes back years. Suffice to say, its not going to change.
