Greenhorn...again

Post by Debris »

First let me get through the usual, first time posting rigmarole. I've played most of the "giant robot" type games at one time or another in all of their incarnations. From board games to computer games, both strategic and sim types, to card games. I've even played some of the more obscure type board games such as Battleforce... anyone?...anyone?

Anyway, I consider myself a decent player who can more than hold his own in any of these types of games...until now. I have now been humbled and shamed by the way I get absolutely owned by this game. Don't get me wrong! I'm in no way saying I don't like the game, I think it's more of a testament of how good this game actually is in terms of AI, balance and depth.

I've had this game for three days and have been visiting this board for the same amount of time. I've read countless strategy and tactic posts. I've downloaded charts and guides...and I still get spanked every time I play. In fact, I've yet to even win the first Savannah campaign scenario. This game has given me some serious blows to my now fragile ego.

I'll download the Deep Core campaign tonight, which I hope will help...or at least allow me win a freakin' game! I have the turn sequencing down and the game mechanics seem easily understandable to me. In fact, it's a pretty ingenious system for a turn-base, tactic level game. So, I'll keep on trying and will one day, hopefully, achieve ToS satori.

Until then, have a question maybe you guys can help me with:

Is there a screen overlay on the main combat map that helps to identify which jock is in which titan? By this I mean, is there any way to get the jock's name, or maybe squad member number, to show up floating above or below the titan icon on the hex map during combat?

I ran into a problem where I thought I was closing with my CC titan, and linking up with my support, and the opposite was actually true. Needless to say, that battle didn't turn out very well for me at all. If there was some way to differentiate them by sight (unfortunately they both had the same titan icon) it probably would have made a difference...not that I would have won or anything... Notice that I didn't mention that I probably should have been more cognizant of the pilot name each time those titans moved. So much for situational awareness.

Well, thanks for letting me rant and I look forward to posting, and possibly plying with you all in the future.

The info screen reveals this in the bottom left of the screen at a glance.

You can also use F2 to show some stats.

Left-click on the hex with the titan(s). It'll show you what titan it is, and the jock's name. If you want additional info, then use keys 1-8 until you find the desired titan/jock (check bottom of status window for id).
Or, like Eric said, use F2. Click on the desired jock's name and the respective status window will pop up.

Yup. Been there; done that; bought the T-shirt.
