Maps

Post by RobW »

All, I am just beginning to look at scenario and am wondering if anyone has the address of any websites with historical maps or information. I am wanting to look at the invasion of Britain (obviously this makes it hypothetical) so the South East coast of England would be a starting point (and unlike Robin Hood -Prince of Thieves, I wont put Hadrians Wall 1 days ride on horseback from Dover)

What's wrong with the ordnance survey maps? They should at least give you the lie of the land, locations of towns, etc

Then a visit here
http://uk.geocities.com/pillboxesuk/
may give you some idea of the locations of defensive lines, forts, etc.
They struggled with a ferocity that was to be expected of brave men fighting with forlorn hope against an enemy who had the advantage of position......knowing that courage was the one thing that would save them.

have looked at modern OS maps but they have motorways on them (and the channel tunnel). Is there an historic OS website (will have another look at them anyway). Related to this - what scale is best to make translation to SPWAW easiest? For first scenario I am looking at a long thin map (sort of 100 x 50) with the attacker coming in form the bottom.

The great thing about the British road system if you care to thing of it as great, is that motorways generally were not built on existing roads. They cut across country. So if you simply ignore or delete those and the other obvious new additions, you would be quite close to life in the 40's.

Have you gone around used book shops or church jumble sales to find old editions of the OS? Or perhaps you could write to the publishers. I am sure they could supply you with backdated copies. Come to that, ask your neighbours, there's no telling what they have stored in their attics. ;)
