Latest Version of Game

Post by mcaryf »

Hi

I have been playing this game since it was called Second Front - Germany turns East (I still have a 5.25 inch floppy of that!!). I updated to WIR and it has never been off one of my computers since then but I did not realise there was a new variant.

Where do I download the latest version plus patches?

Hi Flanker

Thanks - I now have my original WIR plus the new WIR on my PC. The only trouble is finding time to play it again! I currently have KP, HOI, WNLB and Fighting Steel all competing for my few spare hours as well as WIR.

I'm not sure i recognize all the abbrv.'s, but are they mostly startegic/grand scale type of games? those are my fav! what's yer opinion on the ones you just mentioned? i'v always wanted to screw around with clash of steel (diff from fighting steel?), but WiR got me first!

Strategy Games

Hi Flanker

Sorry for abbrevs. - my current main game is Hearts of Iron which is an immense real time WW2 simulation. You can play any of 80 or so nations handling economy and war. It has many faults not least in its combat resolution but its sheer depth is incredible and the manufacturer Paradox supports it well. KP = obviously Korsun Pocket - excellent battle resolution but not broad strategy. WNLB (Waterloo Napoleon's Last Battle = Napoleonics, not supported well by supplier, based on Sid Meier's Gettysburg engine but an active modding community). Fighting Steel = WW2 real time naval battle resolution no aircraft or land but very good if you like naval wargames. Taken over by a group of enthusiasts who are supporting and developing it but do not charge (donations welcomed) for their updates. You have to buy the original. A campaign harness is about to be released for sale using FS for conflict resolution I think this will be good.

I have played a game called Clash of Steel some years ago - not sure if same as you mean. It was Ok but not fantastic.

The one that has a chance to outshine WIR in the strategy genre is HOI but as I said has flaws at present. For a pure wargame I really like KP. I have Gary Grigsby's Pacific War which is also excellent although huge - I understand Uncommon Valour is a good follow on from that but have not got it yet (there are only so many hours in the day!).

And for all of us strategic level lovers, there is some possibly exciting news going on in the world, although the info disappeared as soon as it became common knowledge. John Tiller, currently of Panzer Campaigns/Modern Campaigns/other series fame working for HPS, has been working on a War in Europe type game as his "hobby", as he loved the boardgame he said. He had a screen shot of it posted, but within one day of someone posting a link to it at another site, he took it down. But the map is 250,000 hexes (give or take, maybe someone counted them all ;-) ), division level I believe, probably some kind of production, etc. Looking forward to it coming out.
