Mircea's Wisp

Post by rosary »

I need a squad to go investigate the Outpost on Whim. We have
lost contact with them. Its probably just a broken transmitter. However,
due to its proximity to Beyond and the starmenter clans, it might be
advisable to bring your full squad.

120 tons is minimum tonnage. Difficulty depends on what enemies you face and what you're driving :)

As always feedback is welcome. Update is lower down in the thread.

Cool, more campains

I'm finding I really like the campains/missions more then the regular random battles since they introduce 'direction' which can vastly change the types of stadegy I use. btw... any chance of a mission where you have to rescue/protect/keep alive/ folllow an AI controlled titan? These were the really hard ones for me since they DRASTICLY change my normal tactics. I would NEVER run across an open field in front of a group of AI titans if I didn't have to 'save' my AI controlled 'teammate'. makes for a real challenge

btw.. stop putting time limits on your polls, I doubt I'll get to play this one for a while.

I'm about halfway through the first map; I'm having to go slow due to time constraints. Looks good so far, the only problem I've noticed is the event text for the repair bay at 23/14 calls it an ammo bay. Still works as a repair bay, though.

Yes, I always add a text mistake so that other's aren't blinded by my perfection. I hope the maps are at least a fun diversion. At what rank/ tonnage are you playing it?

Went in with an assault, 2 heavies, a medium, and a light. Ranks are 2 elite, 1 crack, 1 vet, and 1... green? novice? Can't remember.

Already had one nasty shock. After dealing with 2 Recons, I came around the mountains at the north end and had a Long Range Assault Titan staring at me from long range. And me with mostly short range weapons.

I reckon that's what you meant by opposition depending on what you bring in, eh? :)

If you're looking at the terrain there then you'll see what you should do if the enemy is Long Range.

A few things:

Map 1:
-3.0C/sec?! Is that needed? [-1.0 from Polar and -2.0 from environment]
9 bays in a 29x30 map?!
Minimum tonnage 120 tons?! With 8 titans as mandatory opposition?
A building on frozen water?! A cryochamber of sorts or something? ;)
Repair bay texts mention a time for completion, it's not the case for repair bays.

Map 2:
Is Boheme XI a planet or a continent after all? Check the briefing. Whim?
Minimum tonnage 120 tons also? With team 3 and what is about to happen to them? Hmm...

Keep your maps simple. You're trying to do too much in too little space. Either use larger maps or use less stuff. Maps are too cluttered, and too claustrophobic. The "dungeon" approach is nice for one or two maps, not entire campaigns. Your maps are all close quarters, which is very restrictive.
Don't use Pit as default ground, although it looks good in 3D it produces very awkward results. The height difference between the lowest plain and the highest mountain should do.
Pay attention to details.

Answers

1) -3.0C/sec. Yes, I think it makes the game faster and funner.
2) Bays, Those that don't need them don't have to use them. Those that need them have them. Not everyone playing is a strategy master yet. Normally, I don't use them except to make sure they are working.
3) Yes, 8 titans. Wait till you see Boheme XI.
4) Yep, right on frozen water. These things happen in strange environments,
5) Some listings are wrong so a physical check is required for confirmation by the player. All buildings should be checked.

Boheme XI
1) Briefing says its a continent.
2) Yep, minimum is 120 tons. Its listed as Important in the briefing and it is important. I have beat this using a rookie squad with 3 recons. I also thought it was fine with a Veteran squad in 6 Heavies.

Other answers:

1) I like pit. But I'm using my own terrain mod with fractal noise in the color channel. see attachment.
2) I like close quarters.

Feel free to make some maps to your own liking.

1) not really, not most of the time.
2) hmm, some have infinite "charges". But my main point was the map is a few square kms wide... besides, difficulty is normal, which is not exactly low.
3) I did, and commented below. And?...
4) sure, whatever.
5) didn't understand. there's no time setting in repair bays.

1) briefing also says Planet Boheme XI, 6th Decant. That's what I meant. Roman numerals are also usually associated with planets, not continents.
2) sure, whatever. The formula for 4 team missions however tells me something else.

1) what you use for texture doesn't change the terrain characteristics.
2) I like chocolate myself.

Pic: I like the color for acid, but the acid&rock doesn't work. Can't be a "solid" color, look at the effect in fords - breaks the flow of the stream.

Map 1
bay at 2/23 : set to ground+air contact.
bat at 10/22: it's an ammo bay, but text says repair bay - event is correct though.
event at 11/22: "opened the next section of the map" ?? Are they playing an RPG or something?
A few spelling errors here and there.
Curious about the # of charges for each bay, did you roll a d20 or something? :)
The victory debriefing talks about other outposts on Whim. How many outposts can you build in a single planet?!
The target areas, hmm...
Using savannah/core/biochem hexes in a polar map is kinda strange, it creates "heat pockets".

Map 2
Hmm, Whim XI...
Restock in an health bay...
This outpost on Whim, outposts on Boheme XI story is really confusing. Needs work.
Victory debriefing, the Gersen squad wasn't exactly destroyed by another squad, was it?

OK, finished the second map (finally). Have to agree with Iceman, the dungeoncrawl feel detracts from the campaign. Plus, thinking realistically, these are supposed to be hills and mountains we're talking about; they're not going to up and disappear on a radio signal. Not to mention it makes the map take too long to play; I think I was well into the 3000's on the game clock.

The cramped quarters were also annoying. I had a GMH titan that at times was almost useless, as the enemy titans, at contact, were too close. I understand you like close combat, but you're not designing the campaign for you alone (are you?;))

All bays on the second map need to be double-checked on their messages. Nearly all of them say, "Restock in 60 seconds." Not appropriate for Health, Repair, and Armor Bays.

What happened to the destroyed shells of the Gersen squad? When I got to that part of the map, I expected the ground to be littered with their scorched wreakage.

A warning about the temperature change would be nice. Something like "Hey guys, be careful... it seems a bit warmer over this way" or maybe "Watch your temps, this area has hot spots." Just a thought.

Finally, the storyline... going a bit far afield, aren't we? I understand why the information was confusing to my jock, since it confused me, too. Sounds like good sci-fi non-science, just make sure you understand the concept you're trying to get across. Completely invent the 'rules' for your concept, then imagine how someone would discover those rules (including which ones they'd get wrong at first).

As always, feel free to disagree with (or disregard entirely) any of these comments. All in all I liked it, just needs smoothing.

Many of your questions will be answered in map 3. You are assuming to much at this point. For instance, XI does not always mean 11.

Sci-fi theme/Concept is from Paul Dirac of Cambridge University. Commonly refered to as the 'Sea of Dirac'. It is a theory in Quantum mechanics. Does it exist? The evidence is all around us. In quantum mechanics if the possiblity is not forbidden then it does occur.

Health bay stores ammo? This is a common accurance even today and not considered unusual. If the text is wrong. I will fix.

Thank you for your comments.

Well, I remember when Boheme XI was still a mission map, and as such I think XI *was* in fact 11. :) But things evolve pretty fast with you... :D

Widowmaker meant the same as I, health isn't something that gets restocked like ammo.

Wm, the Gersen squad landed where it shouldn't have, so you won't be seeing the wreckage. Let's just say they were vaporized :)

well, I just think all feedback just ends up making a better mission for everyone which is my prime goal. I never take offense from comments.
Someone who takes offense when none was meant is a fool. Someone who takes offense when someone meant it is still a fool. I think every time I've ever posted a map I ask for feedback. I really do appreciate those that take the time to play the maps and comment on them. Hopefully, everyone is having fun with the game and these maps just add some extras.
