Sounds of SP:WAW

Post by Bernie »

Okay, who here has any real experience in working with the sounds of the game?

I'm currently in the process of doing two things, enjoying my new computer audio setup, and creating a new mod for the game.

In the course of doing these things I'm exploring the sound files in the game (the new mod will need custom sounds) and I'm getting a ta confused about some aspects of how sounds get used in SP. There seem to be many, many sound files that never actually get used in the game (at least I've never heard them), and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the numbering system used. Does anyone have a listing of what's what?

I've also seen quite a few weapons in the OOB's with "0" in the sound box, but which still have very specific sounds associated with firing them. How is this done?

How are some of the other sounds in the game "associated", such as ricochets, etc? (Hilarious to hear troops using a bayonet against a tank and hear that rapid MG ricochet sound...you can just picture a Japanese steak house chef attacking a Sherman with his knives at warp speed :D)

I'm also interested in revamping many of the sounds used in the game. Awhile back someone came out with a limited set of stereo sounds for the game, but I'd like to add to that effort and make everything stereo, including the music files. However, it's a big job, and not something I want to do on a bunch of files that never get used.
What, me worry?

What about the H2H sounds? Mebbe I just haven't heard all the original sounds, but the variety so far (H2H.fr, playing "Hell on Earth" yet again <G>) is fascinating, especially when I hear something entirely new and am going "What the hell was *that*?" (I'm almost afraid to hit a mine now. <heheheh>)

I vaguely remember someone replacing sounds with larger stereo sounds (and posting about it in the forums), but IIRC he had some problems if the file/sound got too large/long. <?>

B,
I believe many sounds are associated by the vehicle's class. I've colleced a number of soundclips (complete with a text listing) that I'll upload, and PM you the link.

Thanks Jim :)

Okay, I can see it being done by class, but how to edit that? For example, in the mod I'm creating perhaps I want to change the ricochet sound to something else, but only for a certain type weapon. Where do I change it? If I change the sound file itself, that changes it for everything that uses it. And there are other sounds I'd like to change, such as music, that I have no way to tell what file is played when. Arrrgghhh! :D
