ANY TIPS ON MAKING MAPS IN SP:WAW, PLEASE

Post by Lord Absinthe »

Hello,

I'd like to know some tips for making maps; I'd need some suggestions about:

1) Making an airfield (simple strip and complex airfield)

2) Making a City (different sizes of it)

and 3) Making a jungle scenario.

Thank you very much,
Sergio

There are some great map makers out there, and Brent is right up at the top of the list. I won't name names because I don't want to leave anyone out, but I hope you will help this aspiring map maker!

I'd like to know some tips for making maps; I'd need some suggestions about:

1) Making an airfield (simple strip and complex airfield)

I LIKE TO USE THE DIRT ICON OR CEMENT ICON WHEN MAKING THE STRIPS. AROUND THE EDGES I PUT BUILDINGS AS HANGERS, ROADS, TOWERS, WORKSHOPS, ETC. THEN ADD A FEW REINFORCED HEXES FOR AA GUNS AND THEN IT STARTS TO TAKE SHAPE.

2) Making a City (different sizes of it)

I "SEE" THE COMMUNITY IN MY MIND WHEN I CREATE ONE. THINK OF THE COMMUNITY YOU LIVE IN AND DESIGN ONE THAT IS SIMILAR. MY FIRST "CITY" WAS ACTUALLY A RECREATION OF OLD TOWN SCOTTSDALE WHERE I LIVE. FUNNY AS HELL.

I ALWAYS TRY AND MAKE THE TOWN AS REALISTIC AND HISTORICALLY CORRECT AS I CAN MAKE IT. I DO ALLOT OF RESERACH LOOKING IN BOOKS, WEB SITES, MAGAZINES, ETC TO HELP ME IDENTIFY KEY FEATURES THAT WERE IMPORTANT.

MAKE SURE YOU PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE GROUND TERRAIN AND HEIGHT. IF YOU CAN FIND A GOOD TOPO MAP, EVEN BETTER.

and 3) Making a jungle scenario.

THERE ARE SOME PRE-MADE JUNGLE MAPS IN VARIOUS SPWAW WEB SITES THAT ARE FREE TO ANYONE. I WILL BE POSTING MY GUADALCANAL CAMPAIGN IN A WEEK OR SO AND WILL PUT THE JUNGLE MAPS ON THE SITE. THERE ARE NINE OF THEM.

Thank you very much,
Sergio

GOOD LUCK SERGIO. DESIGNING AND MAKING THE MAP IS, IN MY OPINION, THE BEST PART OF DESIGNING A SCENARIO OR CAMPAIGN.

Will not sure what kind of tips you want but what I would seggest for each of them questions is to go to Tankheads site and download the maps that me and others got posted their along with the maps that come with the game and look them over and see what you like and what you dont like and make use of it, thats what I did when I first started making maps.

use your Chlanda programs as much as possible they'll reduce your work effort by
quite an order of magnitude!

I suggest finding topographic maps and aerial photos of the area that you want to make a map of. There is no substitute for a map that looks like the real thing. When people who are familiar with the area depicted in the map scna over it and recognize it for what it is supposed to be, that is very rewarding...

Speaking of Mr. Chlanda's program, I am doing a map of the area east of Bastogne (Wardin, Mageret, Neffe, Bizory, Marvie, etc., and I plan to do several scenarios based on actions in a nd around those towns. The width of the SP map is not wide enough to create one single map that covers the terrain that I need. So, In was looking in Chalnda's map program to see whether or not I could create another map, copy the area around Marvie, which is on the western edge of the map, and paste into the new map near the middle. The reason that I want to do this is one of the scenarios I want to make involves an end run around and behind Marvie by the Germans. Therefore, I need space to the west of the town.

My problem is, when I open the map with Chlanda's program, the only part of the map I can access is the north-eastern part. The part I want to copy is on the south-western edge. Doe anybody have an idea, besides Mr. Chlanda himself, of course, how to access all of a larger map in his program?

I posted a new thread to answer your question as it is an important topic ...
essentially you can draw the entire map of
of the area then create sections of it as needed.

Note I was specific in what I said catch
the thread
Chlanda, Large map into smaller map ...

Hi theres another topic on making maps
(two now) with Chlanda.

Although my original posting got butchered
I'll briefly mention some of what didn't get on the forum over the two subsequent New Topics. There's a book titled DECEPTION in
WW2 -- Oxford Press

It has on following page 114 I believe a picture of an airport (two picture pages from pge 114). I particularly like the picture because it has a shape similar to the counters from a magazine game that I used to own when I was very young (Strategy and Tactics) In the game there was a counter selection which included airfields in this particular shape as seen in the picture. The game was on the Falkland Island's battle!
It was particularly fun the game. Another reason I look forward to SPMVer.
With Chlanda it would be possible to draw the entire Island on several bmp's.
Then to simply battle it out!

however by guessing the wingspan of the planes in pictures you can derive an approximate value for the entire airport.

Then draw it.
