LRCAP

Post by spence »

Let's say there is this big CV battle and a certain carrier launches a strike and is subsequently clobbered. The air strike diverts to a friendly airfield whereupon they discover a reception committee of LRCAP. It would seem that showing up for a fight unarmed (mostly) and out of gas would place one at something of a disadvantage. Has anyone seen this happen, done it, or had it done to them.

There will be more on this later. Such has occurred but I had to rush off to work after watching the combat save before I could even check out how my own forces fared in the great battle. We were using 2 day turns and in the 2nd day of the battle I was struck by how small his airstrikes were which originated from a field which in the first day was launching around 60 SBDs plus fighters. The first day during which my planes sank Lexington I had 25 A6Ms flying LRCAP over Irau from Lunga. The 2nd day I had around 50 A6Ms doing the same thing. There was no notification about intercepts or anything but although the field must have recovered Lexington's airstrike from the day before and there were lots of SBDs there at that time the strikes from Irau on the 2nd day were totalled about only 18 SBDs in each of the day phases.

It might be too good to hope for but I'll check losses and get back to y'all tomorrow or so.

Well I checked the losses and so forth: 60 F4Fs, 34 SBDs and 13 TBFs. I forgot to look at whether the losses were destroyed on field, operational, air to air etc...oops. There was a notification following the last of my 2nd days strikes indicating that a couple of so and so's were credited with kill number thus and so. During the 2 day turn the total of the combat reports (including a bombardment) indicated that 25 F4Fs and 16 SBDs were destroyed in combat---pretty big discrepancies however both Wasp and Lexington were sunk so maybe that's where the rest came from. Both carriers were well within range of Irau for planes to divert - Lexington about 6 hexes away and Wasp only 2 or 3.

I'm not really sure whether this worked as hoped or not. Wish I knew how to attach the file so the real computer jocks could dissect what happened.

Checking figures with my erstwhile opponent it appears that the LRCAP over the airfield had no effect on the a/c diverting thence from demolished carriers. Oh well.
