Two weeks in the Coral Sea
Friends.
To celebrate the successful installation of a fully patched (up to 2.30) UV onto my new home computer, I played through the first scenario; the Battle of the Coral Sea, the first two weeks of May 2002.
To celebrate the return of the boards, I thought I'd share some of the high points with you.
Playing as USN against the AI all options operative.

RE: Two weeks in the Coral Sea
Following reports that the IJN was planning attacks on Port Moresby and the Solomon Islands, the USN carrier fleet in the South Pacific (namely Lexington, Saratoga, the few cruisers Noumea could patch together and five destroyers) set out for the Solomons at the beginning of May 1942, trusting to native luck and land based aircraft to protect Port Moresby.
This proved to be a wrong call within four days, when an IJN carrier fleet was reported off the north coast of New Guinea and Port Moresby suffered an attack from carrier based aircraft.
The USN carrier fleet headed west at flank speed ...

RE: Two weeks in the Coral Sea
As the sun sank below the waves, so did the Yorktown. Her damage was too severe for her to reach Port Moresby. Her escort sailed for Noumea.
Which was pretty much the end of the battle. IJN aircraft began to attack Port Moresby day and night, though with precious little effect on the runway, while the aircraft there rested for lack of naval targets.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The end game report showed just how successful the battle had been.
Despite the IJN having forces in Buna and Gili Gili, the score showed a Decisive Allied Victory by 2155 points to 1628.
CV Zuikaku and CVL Shoho were confirmed sunk, along with two IJN destroyers, one MSW, three PG and eleven AP. The USN had lost CV Yorktown, DD Dewey and one submarine.
But it's even better than that for the USN. CV Shokaku is just outside Truk, with 57 systems damage and 97 floatation damage. She may go the way of the Yorktown before reaching port. If she does reach port, she'll be out of action for a long time, alongside CA Adoba with 34 systems damage and CA Kinugasa with 30 system damage. By contrast, no USN ship has systems damage greater than ten, and the Lexington only has three!
Effectivly, scratch three IJN flattops (and surely all aircrew) for one USN.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What effect would this have in game terms, and what might it have had in real life?
In game terms, the IJN have two isolated garrisons as Buna and Gili Gili. Any resupply convoy will face the skilled and determined pilots at Port Moresby who wrecked the landing convoys.
With all three carriers unavailable, and eleven transposts lost already, the IJN can surely wave goodbye to any plans to land forces beyone the range of LBA.
However, the Lexington would be very vunerable to the same LBA. More carriers would be needed before an invasion fleet could sail for Gili Gili.
Might the loss of three IJN carriers for one USN have caused the IJN to rethink the Midway operation? Probably not - the planning was too far advanced. But with only one other carrier capable of being repaired - at most - defeat there would have ben even more devastating.
Perhaps the need for forward airfields would have led the IJN to start constructing them in the Solomons ...
