innacurate AA firings

Post by Gavris Narcis »

A must have next change to the game is the tweaked AA hitting probabilty of AA units. I encountered yesterday a situation that 2 units in the same hex (in entrenched position) engaged an approaching aircraft, and they have same hit percent probability (8%); it was an 37mm AA gun and an infantry unit firing rifles (4 hexes). And the same probability was persistent all the course of aircraft. I think first, the 8% it's to low for 37 mm, and second, they can't have same percentage hitting.

8% seems too good to hit, but of course rifles should have drastically lower chance of hit.

Image how hard it is to hit against a plane that moves some hundred meters per second (if diving) and thirty meters per second if it's at high levels and is several hundred meters away with a gun without any calculations. You have to approximate it's distance, speed and how it's going. Then you take the advancement and shoot. If everything was estimated correctly it's a hit, if not then it isn't. Even if you have an autocannon you still had to approximate everything else than speed.

While I'll agree that the accuracy shouldn't remain the same throughout, and that rifles, if indeed it was truly rifles firing and not just a rifle unit firing something else, there are other factors involved it would probably help your cause to figure out. One thing that immediately sprang to my mind was what are the experience ratings of the units involved. I'm not sure I've ever seen rifle fire that was used as AA, but I do think I've seen LMG's on rare occasion and SMG's strangely enough.

8% isn't bad at all. We're not talking about SAMs here. Remember for a multiple weapon squad (like infantry), the To hit chance is for the weapon with the *best* chance, not all of them.

Charles, IIRC MMGs and HMGs will fire on aircraft if they are mounted on vehicles such as troop carriers. May also be the case for tripods although in reality it would require a dreibein AA mount.

8% is one in 12 rounds, roughly. That is a huge percentage compared to the actual number of rounds shot that hit.

Yeah, but those are actually AA mounts to my recollection. You know, like the .50calAA all the US AFV's seem to have. The GE HT's will fire their AAMG's every once in a while too.

I've seen a lot of times MMG and HMG firing to attacking planes, and even infantry firing with their rifles to the aircraft, but it happens only when the plane is a Close Support one (maybe the AI interprete it's diving) and when the firing units are in quite high places, such as top of hills or some buildings. I've never seen a HMG firing against a B-17 [:D][:D] (well, unless being a AA one)
Everytime I hear the word "culture" I pull out my gun.

As wild as that sounds, IIRC I have seen SMG's fire.
