Post about 'most valuable unit'??

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Post about 'most valuable unit'??

Post by Adamo »

A while back I saw a post in one of these forums entitled something like 'Your most valuable unit' and a bunch of you chimed in on what your favorite units were. I did a search to try and find this post but was unsuccessful. Can any of you guys help me find it?

Adamo, this one may have been a victim of the hacker attack that destroyed some of the archived postings. In this case, I'm sorry, but you're welcome to start a new thread on that subject.

Most Valuable Unit

Post by rbrunsman »

The major nations' veteran infantry squads are the most valuable.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Well, there you go, Adamo. In SPWaW, as in WWII, infantry is called "the queen of battle". As I'm a big-time USMC fan, this is definitely a truism. But, remember that this war demonstrated the superiority of close cooperation between all arms--the player who masters the art of combined-arms combat will win the day.
Taken in this light, there isn't any one type of unit you can single out as "most valuable". They ALL represent a key element in the big picture. This is most likely the type of response you would get if you posted this subject.

In reply to Viking, I love my 1944-45-era USMC infantry, but you gotta give credit to the Japanese SNLF and Type A* infantry. These guys are tough opponents. There's nothing like having these guys go toe-to-toe in an amphibious assault mission. The guys who favor armor battles just don't know what you're missing. Play some of Wild Bill's Pacific scenarios, and you'll see what I mean. The point is, this game isn't a one-dimensional portrayal of armor vs armor combat. All arms , to a greater or lesser degree, play their part in this.

Yes I hate that little 50mm mortar the the Jap squads have, and god help your men if they get caught by those triple, thats right triple 25mm AA guns. They were used as beach defense in several battles if memory serves.

I personally find infantry battles far too boring, though if there's at least some armor about it can be interesting. The primary thing that makes infantry often so boring, is that the rifles for example are so often with the exact same rating. Even the LMG's have not that much a difference. The only way it gets juicy is if you have something somewhat odd from the infantry list, such as engineers fighting the regular infantry up close. At least with tanks there's great variety in gun/armor/speed/size. With infantry all the armor is the same (none), the speed is very often the same, the size is often the same, and of course much of the guns are the same in effect, or with little variance.

I agree about infantry often slowing down a battle. I remember reading posts about how the best way to do an all-armed advance was with tanks and an inf. screen moving 1 hex per move to avoid ambushes. S-N-O-R-E! LOL! 'Where is my blitzkrieg?' right? Ha![:)]

That said, I would have to vote my veteran Panzergrenadier squads for most valuable unit. (Goofy ain't it?) Those guys can do anything and have worked a few miracles for me in the past: Holding off Russian hordes; laying ambushes for enemy tanks; digging enemies out of city blocks. My favorite has to be when they close-assaulted a French destroyer that had been hit by several 88 rounds. They sent it to the bottom and I like to imagine that they boarded it like a bunch of blood-thirsty pirates and scuttled it. Aaargh!

I must admit well placed units such a MMG can be very very crucial. I have seen a couple of well placed dugin MMGs and a AT gun effective control a large area of ground

Maybe I 'm misunderstanding, but your most valuable unit has to be the A0, right? Ever try fighting without it?
