You get points for opponet Op losses. Seems a little like pouring salt in the wound; your pilot flys into a coconut tree, you lose a plane and the enemy get credit for it [:D]

True, but remember some of those Op losses are actually planes damaged crashing on the way back home. Flak, damaged in air-to-air combat...

oh are they? I always thought planes crashing on the way home were credited to the cause that inflicted the damage (ie Flak or A2A) isn't that why sometimes you get a message after the fact that pilots are credited with kills... maybe I am wrong about this, wouldn't be the first time [:'(]

Im about 90% certain they get credited to the cause and not put down as op losses if they are air to air, but not so sure about AA

I think this is correct, if you force enemy to use his air force intensively in inappropriate conditions, you should be credited for enemy a/c lost in accidents. All those Japanese a/c ditched into sea, crashed in forced landings or simply disappeared in pacific in desperate attempts to attack ‘canal from Rabaul and Kavieng were rightfully added to US credit after the war.

I find the way the game handles op losses to be quite interesting. Initially you see a higher percentage of op losses for the Japanese even though they have more experienced pilots because they are using longer ranged aircraft. Overall, allied op losses are low (percentage-wise) in the early war because most missions are fighter sorties with very short ranged aircraft (until the P-38 comes into service). As the game progresses the number of losses due to ops changes. Even though the Japanese pilots are poorer, they fly fewer sorties and their overall number of op losses goes down. Allied op losses go up, especially on a percentage basis (even though their pilots are better) because they are flying many more bombing missions over greater distances (often with damaged aircraft on the return leg).

The level of op losses can be controlled by the player by the way he handles fatigue and sqn rotation, missions flown and weather flown in. The one weakness in UV is that you cannot set a maximum range for a sqn for a particular mission (to prevent A3M2's from flying to Lunga on escort if they're not needed). This apparently has been changed in WITP and therefore may someday be retro-fitted into UV.

Don't forget landing on bombed out airfields and in carrier skylights that you
so convienently left for them to shorten there trip to there sleeping berths.[:D]
