Seasons/Weather Wrong in UV

Post by swagman »

Has this ever come up before? The seasons and weather in UV is completely wrong. It is northern hemisphere, not southern hemisphere!

It struck me playing Summer of '43, June to October. IT is Winter that starts in June in the South Pacific, nor summer.

The BIG impact on the game, is that summer is the wet season/cyclone season. All those storms that stop air operations. They happen in summer, not winter. Winter has VERY, VERY stable weather. No storms. Beautiful flying every day.

As a game, this means little. As a simulation though, it means that battles aren't representative of what occurred historically.

You might be right, but the weather is so erratic in UV anyway that it doesn't really matter. You can't really count on the 'thunderstorm' or 'clear' forcasts - there will allways be a hole in the overcast or a cloud in the otherwise perfectly blue sky at exactly the single location where you don't want it to be - usually over your transport TF without CAP or over your air base / carrier TF when fat juicy enemy transports are abundant and in range... Yeah. The weather simulation in UV is one of its worst features. You get bad weather all year round and there is no way to know where it will be from day to day. I had hoped for better, but I say that about how my children turned out, too.
Put my faith in the people
And the people let me down.
So, I turned the other way,
And I carry on anyhow.

There is an excellent description of Coral Sea weather in the paper done post-war by Richard Bates while at the Naval War College (his 'Battle of the Coral Sea: a strategical and tactical analysis). You can get a copy (PDF) by connecting to

www.dtic.mil go to the technical reports database....

Have fun. I've found TONS of interesting material written by military officers here...
So much WitP and so little time to play.... :-(

Is what I've noticed is there's always a thunderstorm when:
The IJN sends a big CV TF.
The IJN sends a big BMB TF.
The IJN sends a invasion TF.

Hey - if you're playing against the AI, you are ALWAYS getting cheated. It has nothing to do with the difficulty setting. The game is just set up, in single player mode, to f#ck you over.

All the more reason for PBEM, but I wish it wasn't so dishonest.
