two questions (ammo & aviation support)

Post by LLv34_Mika »

hi there

just testing around vs ai and tried to punish the US with some mines near their bases. Laid some mines near Australia or their home base... now those subs return. My MLs already filled the small passage at Lunga and are docked on the shortland islands. Now I have the problem that I don't get new mines!?

will I have to return to Truk? All the way home just to get a few mines? Or does it depend on the port size and Rabaul will do the trick as well?

Second Question:
I have some planes doing naval search and ASW patrol on a pretty small airfield and I noticed that I don't have enough aviation support. I can imagine that they don't perform at 100% (or do they?) but anyway... how can I increase aviation support to a suitable level?

Cheers
Mika

Mines can only be loaded at Truk for the Japs, and Brisbane or Noumea for the Allies

You need more base forces, or if they are float planes then AV's at the base will help

With AV's and float planes, you can even set up an airbase on a beach (the dots on the map); The floatplanes operate from the AV.

AV's not only support their own float planes but also float planes attached to the Island that has supply.

This is a result of the great mine debate on this forum while the game was in its infancy (wasn't it during beta testing? or was it after release? I can't recall). Mines were being relied upon much more heavily than they were in the actual campaign for the south pacific, so the decision was made that they could only be loaded at Truk, Brisbane and Noumea. By doing so, mines are still playing a larger role than they did in the real campaign, but with this compromise their use "feels" right... (okay, not to some people!).

Maybe,

But they didn't scatter mines haphazardly in every corner of the Pacific in real life as well.

Without some kind of limitation, the game goes from the "Campaign for the South Pacific" to the "Mine Warfare Campaign for the South Pacific".

I do not want to see mine warfare become the "centerpiece" of the game. Both navies had doctrines that involved manuever of warships versus mine warfare, so mine warfare took a back seat to surface and aviation.

Plus, the way they are modeled in UV, they act as remote sensors, telling you what ships, when they are there, and what happens to them when enemy is moving in hexes where you may not have assets to observe them.

Let's talk about dumb.[8|]

welll of course not [:'(]

tho i think a totally mine warfare game would b at the very least interesting [:'(]

i dont want to see mine warfare become the centerpiece either, i just want to SEE the game period LOL

LOL

the mines can b used as sensors?

sumhow i dont think the tech existed back then for that [8|][:'(][:D]

Of course not, but that is exactly my point.

That is HOW MINES FUNCTION IN UV.

You surround a place with mines, and you will know when the enemy enters a hex around the place with messages such as:
"MSW Bubba detects minefield"
"DD Slick destroys 2 mines"
"CA Palooka hits Mk 99 mine"
etc....

[8|]

Forgive me if I don't laugh out loud as you, as I dislike this part of the mine warfare piece, and dislike "expanding it"

I have played a fair number of PBEM games, and have had opponents make extensive use of minefields. To the point of being ridiculous.

God knows if they made it EASIER to load up on mines.

Jeeez.

lol

i know i know

[:'(]

and i do see ur point

but it just seems that the supply lines for mines, at least for the japs, is a little long

and noumea is a decent distance from the solomons lol

i dont think that mine warfare should be expanded, as it is only a small part of warfare in its totality

tho, i too have used mines pretty well [;)]

as for the mines being "sensor nets" i guess the japs and the allies have come up with a deadly new mine -

the LETHAL, ever present, ominous.......

I tend to find that I use mine warefare a fair bit as the Japs, but very little as the Allies
