Aclarative note (Marc Schwanebeck):

Pz.Jäg refered usually to anti-tank guns mounted in a chasis from an anterior tank model with little cover & light armour. Also used for unit designations (even if they were armed with Jgd.Pz).

Jgd.Pz refered to long and heavy cannon (made for tank destroying puorpose) armed tanks (based on anterior chasis) with low profile and heavy armour (at least in the front, usually sloped too).

Both of them had little traverse and guns were not mounted in turrets just to reduce profile.

The vehicle designation can vary quite a bit, for example the "Hetzer"

Jagdpanzer 38(t)
Panzerjäger 38(t)

and also

Sd.Kfz.138/2

All are official designations.

Yes, I agree tht in some cases it's a bit doubtfull, but for example, the Hetzer most times it's refered Jagdpanzer 38(t)

The PzJg/JgPz sounds like something the Australian Army would do. When we got the PIAT from the UK, our army renamed it the PITA - no kidding - short for "Projector, Infantry, Tank Attack". Like the US Army, which called its towed anti-tank guns "tank destroyers" too.

The idea is to pick a 'hard' name for the equipment to make the crews feel tough and aggressive. I doubt it fools anyone that actually has to use it though!

Well, you could call it the official knickname.

Shortly Germany will have a "Puma" again too [;)] (needless to say to few only)
