Yes and no, the couldn`t fit everything in and they made a few change but the basic plot is the same, a sniper duel in stalingard. I won`t list all the differences I saw because I don`t want to spoil it for anybody.

The movie was based on the book "War of the Rats."
Retreat is NOT an option.

It's not specifically based on any book about Stalingrad or Zatisev -- at least not to the point where anyone thought this needed to be credited.

It doesn't make any pretense to history, either. There's no based-on-a-true-story mention in the film (though I've not seen all
the promotional materials). At the end they
mention that there was a real person named Zaitsev, that he was awarded the Order of Lenin several times and eventually named a Hero of the Soviet Union, and that you can see his rifle in the Stalingrad War Museum.

There's reviews of this elsewhere, but it's a good story, and I'll probably pay full price to see it again.

Check this movie trailer out - they claim it IS a true story. We know better!

Tommy -- I can't see the trailer, because I have notoriusly bad luck viewing anything at www.apple.com, but I'll take your word for it. It doesn't surprise me, given the general disconnect between the people who make movies and the people who market them.
