Winter Air Zones

Post by Klondike »

Can someone tell me where the winter air zones are?? Especially Japan..It is late 44 in my PBEM Game and I would like to know if Amori and Sappora are considered to be part of the winter air zones..I sent 4 CV task forces to strike the Ports and they failed to launch any missions.
Especially looking forward to Capt. Harlock's and LST's replies [:)]

Hmmm ... I've become predictable. Well, why don't we go with "reliable" instead.

Anyway, the Arctic Weather Zone is all hexes East of X-row 45 and North of Y-Column 12. This begins right around Sapporo, so Aomori should be in the clear. (However, the CV's launching the strike may have been caught in the AWZ.) According to the write-ups I've read, the effects of weather in the AWZ in version 3.2 are even worse than described in the manual--sending CV's there is not a good use of assets.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

RTFM! [:'(][:D][:D][;)]

Actually, I never bothered much about the Arctic Weather Zone, I simply assumed that it includes Alaska, the Aleutians, the Kuriles and Northern Japan. However, when I put my cursor at position the origianl manual claims (45/12), only Karafuto, Anchorage and Juneau find themselves in the Arctic Weather Zone. I'm at loss whether the manual or myself is in error.
In version 3.2 (I quote the v3.2. notes) "the Arctic Zone has been drastically enhanced as to severely limit air operations for virtually all of the year. This is to stop the unrealistic use of this theatre for almost an all year round base of assault into either Northern Japan or North America." Unfortunately this gives no clear indication of the new area, but judging from experience I would say that the Aleutians, the Kuriles and at least Sapporo are definitely within the Arctic Weather Zone.

Hope this helps...

Just started playing PacWar, but I think I have the answer.

The Artic Zone starts at x=45, y=15 and goes east/north.

The map is flat, but the earth is round. To approximate the shorter distances between longitudinal lines as one moves north, India has been wrapped to the northwest. The map therefore starts at x=2,y=0 (Why no x=1 I couldn't guess.), however for y=0 or y=1 the map only only carries to x=22 and the next two (y=2 or y=3) the map carries to x=23.

Now this means y=4 is the first to carry all the way across the map. When you get to Japan and the Aleutians and count down 12 from the top of the map here you are at y=15. This then matches what you would expect for the Artic Zone.

So I would say the manual has an error. It would seem that the AZ starts for x greater than or EQUAL to 45 and for y less than or EQUAL to 15. The manual says "east of" and "north of" these values, but then Sapporo, Etorofo Jima, and Adak I. (southernmost of the Aleutians) would not be in the AZ. But reading the manual text, the intent was to include these in the AZ.

This is only a guess. Wish we could contact the designers and see if this is what happened.
