Wehrmacht advisers to the IJA?

Post by Wannabe »

I retook Lunga about a month ago, and have tried-- twice-- to eliminate the IJA remnants on Tassafaronga. Both times the Japanese sent one small unit, most recently one of only about 120 men, to the Lunga hex and all of the miles I had advanced to Tassafaronga were eliminated. I was at 28 of 30 miles the turn before this new unit appeared, and my units, a total of about a division strength, returned as if they never started the march. At this rate I don't see how I can ever advance and fight, if all the enemy has to do is enter my hex before I enter his-- I'll never get to him.

Any advice?
We sure liberated the hell outta this place.

Yep, this is VERY annoying. I had the very same problem. Even if you mobilize a regiment to attack Tas, the IJN will move guys up (that arrive at Lunga before your guys arrive at Tas). This forces ground combat at Lunga, and yor regiment loses the ground that it's moved towards Tas.

The solution I came up with was...

He -WILL- attack Lunga at some point. You'll beat him, and he'll retreat. But instead of moving forward with ground troops to pursue him to Tas (where he'll just attack you again before you get there)...

Have a airborne unit ready to drop on Tas as soon as he retreats. Your guys will drop on top of them at Tas, and keep his units pinned down, while you move up your land formations. But as long as your airborne unit is occupying his units at Tas, they won't be able to advance to Lunga (like he said, do unto others...). Your airborne guys can hold for a while (only let them do the initial attack, as his garrison at Tas is probably much larger than your airborne guys), just put them on defense until your land formations can relieve them (and begin the attack) from Lunga.

Shore-to-shore amphib assault from Lunga against Tassafaronga with FT-TFs and/or barges.

Is the IJN still able to evacuate troops from Tassafaronga ? If the response is yes, mine the hex as much as you can and set planes with naval attack at Lunga to hit the IJN ships.

If the response is no, you are provided with a free target range. Bomb them with ships and planes and train your crews. And in some months, land troops there by sea (woill be less costly than by airdrop).
