CARRIER GROUP UPGRADES QUESTION

Post by spence »

In the original Pacwar one could manually upgrade carrier airgroups. Ever since the first time I downloaded one of the updates I'd get a message that the computer was out of memory or some such when I clicked on a carrier airgroup. I'm in a PBEM game using v3.2 now and that seems to be the case again, but in the older versions the program would at least ask if I wanted to upgrade when new models came along. Well it's Sept 42 and I've got lots of TBFs sitting in the pool and I've got TBDs on every carrier except the Wasp. No opportunites have arisen wherein the computer inquired whether I'd like to upgrade to TBFs so far. The same applied to Lexington's Fighter Squadron of F2As previously. In that case I had around 400 F4Fs in the pool but Lex was still stuck with F2As when she was sunk in March 42.
I've tried putting the ships in port and reforming TFs and clicking here there and everywhere but I seem eternally damned with these TBDs. How does one upgrade?[:@]

Here's where I confess my knowledge of the game has dropped a bit: I haven't played a PBEM game since Version 2.0 came out. However, from what I've seen of the other players' experiences, aircraft upgrades in PBEM games are not automatic if you have the aircraft factories set to human control.

It sounds like you need to free up a little extra memory to make the game work properly. What version of Windows are you running? If you have Windows 98 (or even 95) a quick boost is to add the line "STACKS=0,0" to your "config.sys" file.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

It seems to me that this *will* happen if you play in Windows (AFAIK, any version).

Try the following procedure. It should work for both ships in port and ships in TF's:

1) Click on the carrier air group.
2) You will see the "out of memory" error. Ignore it and press any key.
3) You should see something like these:
"VF-5 (D-USN)
attached" to CV Yorktown

Fighter
experience: 74
36 x F4F Wildcat Operational"

(due to the "out of memory" problem, you won't be able to see the number of damaged planes, though.)
4) Now press M to change its missions or C to change its type.
5) The rest is the same as any land-based air group... Good luck! [:)]

Thanks Returnfire - I'll give it a try[:)]. I know it's not really a memory thing. I've got 256MB of that and the whole games only 10 or so.

It IS a memory thing as this game is DOS-based and needs a lot of conventinal DOS memory .
Please read the sticky how to get enough DOS-Memory to run this game without problems !
