CAP attacking on return trips?

Post by MasterChief »

Ok, this could be a dumb question but I couldn't find a reference any where. Does UV take into account CAP hitting air groups as they return from a bombing run or break off?

If I understand your question correctly, the answer is no.

No, fighters in UV don't pursue fleeing planes (early returns or after bombings). The sequence of air combat is:
_ all CAP try to intercept and fight escort (and maybe escort try to engage CAP too)
_ remaining CAP planes (still with ammo, fuel and no damage, and not engaged by escort) try to intercept and fight bombers
_ bombers bomb, strafe and so on

I would be cautious about that 'still with ammo' stuff. I've seen pilots doening like 7 planes in a single attack. I don't think that happened ever in WW2.

Major Erich Rudorffer; Nov. 13, 1943, 13 victories in a single sortie

On 15 September, 1942, Marseille of JG 27 destroyed 7 Australian fighter aircraft within an eleven minute period.

During the Marianas Turkey Shoot, on June 19, 1944, US Navy pilot David McCambell shot down 7 Japanese aircraft on a single sortie, and another 9 on 24 October, 1944.

Major William Shomo was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for downing 7 Japanese aircraft in a single sortie on 11 January, 1945.

....

I'm notr sure either planes use ammo in UV but I hope so, anyway some excellent pilots may score very multiples kills in UV as in real life.

Thanks for the info. Figured that was the case. Interesting though, it was not included in the code. Aircraft lose statistics for WWII indicates that a large portion of claimed kills were made on aircraft returning from missions. Especially vulnerable were the damaged aircraft and stragglers separated from the group.
