We`ll all be home for Christmas...

Post by scorryuk »

Is it just me on does playing some of the later scenario`s take a hell of a long time. Am playing scen16 as USN and been at it for 6 weeks. Recently I`ve started to think that this could drag out nearly as long as the real war- maybe UV is an RTS afterall, lol. Took Gili and Lunga back from IJN, sunk 2 carriers and sent 160 other ships to bottom of ocean. Mostly APs, AKs and DD escorts in the hope of starving his troops into submission. But re-inforcements just keep coming. And don`t even start me on those damn AGs. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel.....?

Well the Japanese in real life were exceedingly stubborn about holding on to real estate. Especially beachfront property. In real life though they did decide at some point the that Guadalcanal wasn't worth the shipping cost. However, if you are playing the AI it may be not quite as quick as the Japanese to catch on. Odds are those troops you are hoping to starve into submission are subsisting on grasses, roots, and the occasional betel nut. An offensive move on the ground against them may cause them to break.....maybe.

If you think sinking 160 ships is endless imagine what the full blown campaign in WiTP will be like. [:D] It'll be at least four Christmases until you get to go home.

I'm essentially graphically and history oriented, unfortunately to connect the two I have to do maths. I hate maths.

to keep on topic...I have a game of UV that is about 4 weeks old, actually has been minimised much of that time, I just alt-tab out and close up the laptop and keep it there...

Hats off to the programmers...in that much time running, I have only had to shut it down once because the interface stopped responding properly...

Thanks Brent. [:)] Yes....to meLIFE artist Tom Lea was yet another shining example of The Greatest Generation. Under too much fire on Peleliu to draw or sketch properly, he consigned much of what he saw to memory and painted this picture among others about the battle in his studio in Texas. The vacant, haunted gaze on that Marine is something no camera could have ever captured. Whenever someone mentions the 'Thousand Yard Stare' this is the image I always think of.

Back on topic....in my current game of UV the Japanese AI seems to have no interest in taking Lunga back from me at all. Just a few desultory bombing raids. It seems to be throwing everything into New Guinea instead. Interesting.

Try PBEm and you will see it's roundly a RTS. Most games are done at one turn a day and you're basically in the place of the commander that gives orders one evening and then wait the next evening to see how his subordinates screwed his plans....

No no...I didn't paint that famous picture. LIFE artist Tom Lea did. I wish I could paint in oils that well. Here's a link to lean more about Tom Lea. [8D]

And so back to original topic- isn`t it just a little long! If it takes 6 months to finish a campaign against AI and maybe 2 or 3 times that PBEM. Thats just MAD! And then WITP is bigger again. Hope it has some good delegation in it as moving every single ship & air Sqd. for entire pacific could be just a little time consuming. I better get a fecking medal for this![:D]

I just finished a campaign against my friend Stefan. I pulled out an auto victory on January 1 1943 by taking and holding Lunga. It was a damned near fought thing and a total roller coaster ride. We started the game well over a year ago and have been through a few patches together. We have a mirror game going with me as the Allies. He whipped my butt very quickly and was good enough to give me a restart. That was a year and a half ago at least. We have just hit Feb 1 1943. The issue is still in doubt. Yes, we have been playing forever, but hell yes, I am having more fun with this game than with any other game I owned or have owned. (Well maybe Doom2).

If you think this takes forever, wait till you see WITP. I am not sure I have the will to play a whole campaign. It will sort of like the holy grail. Worth trying but probably impossible [:D]

UV is the first computer wargame i have been playing pbem. And I love it. It is one of the best games i have, and it hasn't hung up yet.
Got three games running, two as the japanese, one as the allies.
love this game.

also waiting for WITP, although that is probably going to break my back.[:D]
