Loading Troops

Post by Bill Durrant »

I'm having trouble loading troops.

Some places I just press Load Only Troops and select the units. Next turn nothing has happened and my TF says loading status is idle?

Also - how do i know when all troops loading are onboard - do i have to count the numbers manually and wait till it reaches the amount.

Also - I'm loading troops at Truk. Get new ships which I also want to load troops but I can't find anywhere that tells me what troops I'm already loading onto other TFs ie the game will let me select a unit that has already been/is being loaded elsewhere. Do I have keep track of unit orders manually.

I really want to give my PBEM opponent a good game but my infantry are spending their lives going up and down gangplanks or sitting on the beach staring at APs.

Any help much appreciated.[&:]

make sure you set a destination for troop ships. That way when they finish loading they move off. otherwise they just unload again. If you select another ship/convoy to load same troops they get broken up into small sections. Just make sure they all reach same destination to regroup into effective fighting force. And don`t forget to take eng regiment (to take down enemy fortifications & build up bases) along as well as base force or HQ for support.

The problem is that sometimes load cost isn't accurate, and then the game automatically adds transports to the TF.

This drives me up a wall because it subsitutes other ships into the TF. Usally its an APD that I had another use for!!![:@]

I only ever load ships to 75% of capacity to allow for supplies to be loaded too. No point loading a TF with troops till they are hanging out the portholes but when they land they have no supplies! Therefore I`ve never had problem with not enough room or computer deciding to pinch transport from elsewhere.

Your infantry sitting on the beach is giving your opponent a very good game.... [&o]

That is the way most soldiers spend their time anyway. Awaiting counterorders after orders.

You probably didn't give a destination to your convoy and so once the troops are loaded the game checks the destination of the TF and finds it to be the hex where it sits so starts to unload. Or if you want to give destinations orders later, give 'patrol/no retire' orders, so the convoy will not unload before you give it orders to do so.

But sometimes there are bugs with the 'load troops only' orders. If you see that nothing happens in a turn, disband your TF and create it in the same hex with the same ships and it will probably work better. Don't ask me why...

As for keeping tracks of units during loading, the answer is yes. When you choose the units you want, you see the size of the unit still in port, so any unit that have allready started to embark will be of reduced size and you may recognize them. But the bast way is probably to load for example all units of the same type in one convoy and then once transports are loaded to recreate convoys as you want. Or load all troops under the same command into the same convoy.

When you create a troops convoy take care that only one unit may be carried in a given transport, so 3 units will size 900 will need 3 ships. An IJN regiment (load cost 6900) will need 7 1000-ton AP or 4 2000-ton AP or 3 3000-ton AP and the extra-space will be used for supplies. So the fleet may need more ships, even if the total capacity is superior to the loatal load coast. It's better to use convoys with transports having all the same size. If you want to load two unist (one size 500 and one size 1500) and use a 3000-ton and a 1000-ton, the game may load the smaller into the bigger transport and then find that the smaller transport is too small and add another ship that you need elsewhere.

Form TF's of like sized ships and types. Make sure you exceed the capacity by 20%. Load a *single* unit on the ships.

Repeat for each unit you want loaded.

Merge all the ships together into one task force once complete.

BTW: WitP does *NOT* auto-add ships when you screw up your math.
