how does digital download work?

I do not see the point of a "backup cd" - is digital download an .iso file to create a cd, or does it install the game on your harddrive, and that is why you need to pay another 10 bucks for a back up cd?

People who have a CD burner will burn their own "backup cd". No need for a backup CD for them. Some people don't have a burner or prefer to let MG do the "dirty work" [;)]
DD in the case of WitP is a 466mb setup.exe file that does install the game on your harddrive.
