Reloading torpedoes

Post by Damien Thorn »

Why can PT boats reload torpedoes in a size 3 or greater port but SS, DD, CL, and CA classes need a size 8 or larger? It would seem to me that it would be just as easy to put a torpedo on a SS or DD as a PT boat. I mean, you're not lifting the things by hand so you need a winch no matter where you are.

You can get around the port requirment with a AD class ship but Japan, for some reason, can't convert its AK ships to ADs like the Allies can so it really doesn't help them at all. It makes me want to trade in the torpedoes on the CL and CA ships for their equivilant weight in AA guns. Now THAT would be an upgrade. At least we could rearm them.

Probably because the torpedo is THE main armament for the PT boats, so if you can't reload them, they are just throwaway units; also you would not drive them all the way back to major ports to reload. (They do not have the range)
The PT boat was designed to operate in unsupported forward bases, this replicates the way they were used. If in a smaller base they need a tender ship (AGP)

It is design of the boat and the size of the boat that allowed them to be reloaded with primative resources.

That's how I read it. You don't need much of a port structure to load torpedos on a PT boat (basic dock, primative crane that can lift 2-3,000 lbs.)

DDs, CLs, Subs need deeper water and structure to lift torpedo higher/further (execpt for sub, but sub needs deeper
port). This would also explain why it takes longer to load/unload transports at small ports. They have to ferry the
supplies to/from the ship which may be offshore.
