F4F-3's long legs

Post by Buck Beach »

I'm sure this isn't a bug so I'll post this here. How can VMF-211 squadron of F4F-3s make the trip to Midway from Wake??

On another note, I've been having mixed results of the Lex getting close enough to Wake before it falls to allow the Squadron to transfer off the island and on to it. Funny thing, the first couple of run throughs (playing around until the patch comes through) I sent the Lex and then the Lex and the Enterprise followed after a couple of turns by a couple of escorted APs to get the most of Base troops and the CD gang off. I was able to do both. I then decided to send the rescuing APs on the Allied's first turn and WHAMMO the next 4 run throughs the Japanese took the island on 12/8/1941. Do you think the AI is smart enough to remember my previous victories or just lucky odds?

I've found that about half the time, the troops on Wake hold it...If you can get transports in to get them out, you could send reinforcements in too and keep the little place.....I mean, it's a nice little getaway...you get off the plane, and you can see water that way....and that way.....and that way...and that way...

But could the squadron have escaped to Midway?

No,

They would not have been able to fly without the use of fuel tanks. Not sure if they were so equipped.

The range of the Wildcat is 850 miles...distance to Midway from Wake...over 1000 miles

The range of the F4F-3 is OK. The problem seems to be that Midway is too close to Wake on the WitP map. It's only 14 hexes (840 miles).

Exactly, the whole map is a bit too small. I guess this was a result of a) having to hexify it and b) trying to avoid a "boring" game where adjacent bases are too far from each other to launch airstrikes.

I can't see the developers screwing with the map distances just to allow ahistorical usage of aircraft to avoid a"boring" game.[8|] LOL[;)] Map has a few anomalies due to flat nature, that's all.

Curious...

How hard would it be to program a "globe" style map. Instead of scrolling around the flat map, you rotate the globe?

Then overlay the hexes on it or something to that effect.

More a question for you computer programmers out there.

calculating distance in three dimentions like that would probably take alot of processing power....your average puter wouldn't be able to handle it probably.

Not so much for the 3D map, JPL has one running on a 386, now load the game on top of that and you may be right. [:'(]

Just look how far apart the aleutians(sp) are...it's not a realistic thing at the present time to be able to simulate the curve of the earth on a map in a game like this.
