8.2 finally works!

Post by Jamminji »

Well fellas... It works!... After a ton of heart aches and BSDs (blue screens of death). It would not download without a BSD. I got a zipped cd and it would not unzip without a BSD. I took the cd to a friends house and it unzipped on his machine, so I made another cd of the exe install file. Went back to my house and it started to install on my machine, but then BSD! I took the exe back to my friends house and tried to install it on his system. It failed to load on his system too! I took it to ANOTHER friends house. It loaded on this machine.
So now I knew I had a working game. I then divided the files in the spwaw82 directory into 2 groups (one group - everything except the wav files in the snd directory, and the other group just the wav files), and burned the installed game files onto 2 cds. I then brought them back to my house and copied these 2 cds to a blank SPWAW82 directory. The first group went on great. The wav files gave me another (GUESS WHAT!), yep a BSD on file 1012.wav. I rebooted and copied all the rest of the wavs. I then copied 1012.wav all by itself and it copied this time. I ran mech.exe and have played my first 8.2 game!

I have no idea what the problem was but find it interesting that 2 of the 3 machine I tried had problems. It may be a coincidence about the wav file but that is the info I have.

Thanks go out to Hexed Gamer for the idea of imaging the working directories!

Looks like a CRC problem, that sometimes happens when you zip files. That´s why it´s recommend to turn CRC check on while zipping.
