Good scenarios for multiplayer?

Post by toddtreadway »

This is the best computer wargame I've played in a long time (Clash of Steel being my all-time favorite). It is playable, realistic and gives the true sense of what a commander's problems are. I took part in many computer battle simulations while in the Army, and HttR gives me that same feel. It was a little different, because in the real-world sims there were actually real unit commanders of the lower-level units actually making the decisions that the AI does for you in this game, but at the higher level it feels very similar. For this reason, I try to push the game on everyone that will listen. [:)]

On to the question: we are having a game day over at my house this weekend (cardboard wargames mostly), and I'm going to set up a game of HttR on my LAN to have a game running all day so that people can come in, try things out, and hopefully enjoy the game enough to buy it. What scenarios would: 1) be long enough so that I could just leave it running at the normal play speed so that they would finish in about ten hours of real time; and 2) be large enough so that there would be room for us to assign specific brigades, etc. to individual players? Any good suggestions?

Tough question.

But, considering that at normal speed one second of real time is roughly 1 minute of simulated time, 10 hours of real time represent 25 days of simulated time.
On the other hand, I usually play one day in-game in about one hour (you have to take into account some speed lag on my old rig, some pause or slow speed to give orders, etc.)
So, all is left is the longer, historical campaign scenarios, that covers the 9 full days.

I didn't play the Eindhoven one yet. So cannot comment on which one is best. But, I'd settle for the Arnhem campaign as it is certainly the most well known.

My 2 cents,

JeF.
PS: forgot to add that this is a neat idea. HttR, unlike most turn based games can run unatended, if need be. And one can come after 15 or 30 minutes to see how things are going and change orders here and there.

As a general rule, we have found that playing solitair you can get through one of the campaigns at the rate of one hour of real time per day of game time. Now that's for us who have been playing this game for quite a while. When playing H2H it takes longer - around 2hours of real time per one day of game time. If you are just going to be giving your initial orders and not reacting and reassessing then things should move along quicker. BTW thse rate are on our P4 2.6s.

Please note that the HTTR supports H2H multiplayer only. Team Play is not supported - ie one player per side only. So I assume you are going to hot seat it with each player issuing orders for his assigned Bde. If that is the case, why don't you try one of the Battle of the Bases scenarios or the Mook Right Hook.

Have fun![:)]

I'll bring the pretzels and "beverages" - just tell me when and where!
