Great Allied Sub Base!

Post by Q-Ball »

I've been using a forward sub base in an AI game that is perfect! Large port, very close to Japan (only 2 days sail), and totally impervious to Japanese attack.

Can you guess the "miracle" base?

Its not like a "Biggles in the Baltic" thing is it? (In Biggles in the baltic, Biggles operates a secret seplane base from a large cave on a small island in the Baltic, but, it could've handled subs as well !!).

No.... on reflection..... you guys have no idea what the hell I'm talking about....

Petropavlask. All Ruskie ports should be considered a serious exploit if this is indeed his Shangri-La.[:D]

It's VLADIVOSTOK!

Size 8 (buildable to 9), right next to Japan, and it can't be bombed unless you want to trigger the red army hordes! The only thing it lacks is a repair facility.

I've been basing alot of the S-Class boats there with their shorter range, and for subs on patrol around Japan it's a quick reload trip if you run out of torps. Big time saver!

Of course, this is WAY GAMEY, and way unrealistic. How kind of the Russkies to give free gas and keep US Torp reloads handy! Not happening in real life.

If possible, a future patch should really cut that out, or against a human I think I would add that to the "house rules".

Wow.. that really shouldn't be possible.

Weren't Americans who crash-landed in Vladivostok interned for the duration?

Cut off Chineese units also draw supply from Russia even when not active. This needs to be fixed also. I understand them wanting to help their commie brethern in the north but come on already! It is hard enough to kill/starve Chineese units without the Russians helping out.

Mongo,

Just got down watching a show on PBS, the official stand was to inturn them for the duration, but secertly they sent them back to the western allies.

We could also be talking about two different situations, but from what I saw last night, they were released, but told the Japanese that they would be inturned.

I seem to remember a discussion in another thread that Dutch subs could not get torpedos reloaded from UK base/sub tender and vise versa. I believe this was logged as a bug. However, weighing the possibility of an exploit of Russian bases as discussed here, this limitation probably makes sense. Have you tested whether or not you can draw munitions and/or supplies from the Russian port? With or without a US subtender present?

Yup, I tried an experiment first. A sub with empty tubes and low tanks I sent to VLAD to see if it would work. It did, the Russkies gassed it up. You don't need a sub tender from the rules, because it's a size 8 or larger port. For that reason, that port on Kamchatka doesn't work. Not sure if I will use up all the fuel in VLAD, but there is an unlimited supply nearby in Okha so sort of doesn't matter.

I agree, this loophole should really be closed.

Here is another one, I can't play for a couple days but someone try this please, tell us if it works:

Base a B-29 unit there![:D]

If you can stage there, I bet you can bomb Japan. The airfield is large enough, and there is plenty of support....you might have to move the Russky aircraft, but that's no problem.

Obviously, another gamey thing that would have to be fixed, but can you do it?

SunD,

Didn't a Doolittle crew crash in Vladi? I was thinking that was where I first saw the intern thing. I never heard that they were released, but it's entirely possible.

I know a professor who specializes in the Gulags. I can shoot him an email and see if he knows anything about the WW2 internment process/figures.

Any nationalities ship can be refueled/rearmed in a port of sufficient size.. Only when you are relying on a ship for torpedoes does the nationality thing flare up.. And if the allies can use Soviet ports for supplies that indeed needs fixed... Either that or the japanese should be allowed to bomb the port and the russians shouldn't do anything about it..

Also, if the chinese units are drawing supply from Soviet bases that needs to be fixed as well... I would vote this problem be fixed first as the base problem only exists if exploited by the allied player whereas the supply problem is automatic.

Thats clearly a bug that needs to be patched. The Ruskies should not let you use Vladivostok for those purposes.

Has anybody bumped this as a BUG report yet? I can imagine sending badly damaged subs to Russia, ones to flooded to make the long trek back to Pearl, but rearming in Russia should not be allowed.
