Leo's Suggestions for WitP Editors Enhancements...

Post by Apollo11 »

Hi all,

While WitP editors are fully functional and can do the work they are not very user friendly and they require long long time (and many many mouse clicks) in order for work to be done.

IMHO there are 2 main areas in which WitP editors can be vastly improved!

Leo's Suggestions for WitP Editors Enhancements

#1 Filtering

Right now in WitP Database editor you can edit all or nothing.

IMHO the addition of filters would _GREATLY_ improve user friendliness of program and enable _HUGE_ time gains...

For each main choice editing (when you press on the corresponding button):

- Devices
- Classes
- Ships
- Aircraft
- Air Groups
- Locations
- Pilots
- Leaders

There should be additional option to filter its contents.

For example, if you press the "Devices" button "Device" data is displayed but since there is no filtering all devices are listed in left area (from 001 to 999) and that is cumbersome.

Here is picture of how things look now:

Image

If there is new additional user selectable filter choice many things would be _MUCH_ easier to do!

Here is picture of how things could be improved with user selectable filter choice (in our example to sort devices by type):

Image

Similar filters should exist for all other main choice editing:

- Classes
- Ships
- Aircraft
- Air Groups
- Locations
- Pilots
- Leaders

#2 "En Masse" Editing

Right now in WitP Database editor you can edit data only one by one.

IMHO the addition of "En Masse" editing _GREATLY_ improve user friendliness of program and enable _HUGE_ time gains...

For each main choice editing (when you press on the corresponding button):

- Devices
- Classes
- Ships
- Aircraft
- Air Groups
- Locations
- Pilots
- Leaders

There should be additional possibility to select multiple objects.

For example, if you press the "Classes" button "Classes" data is displayed but you can edit just one by one (from 001 to 1999) and that is cumbersome.

Here is picture of how things look now:

Image

New enhancement is that user can select one or more objects (usual MS Windows style: Left Mouse + Shift for several in a column, Left Mouse + CTRL for specific one, CRTL+A for select all)!

Here is picture of how things could be improved with user ability to select several objects and change data for just some of the fields (and copy data from one of the selected objects):

Image

Similar ability should exist for all other main choice editing:

- Classes
- Ships
- Aircraft
- Air Groups
- Locations
- Pilots
- Leaders

Example

Imagine that you want to change location of every single "Air Group" using WitP Database editor.

Using Scen#15 as template there are "Air Groups" from 0001 to 2399.

If you want to alter each and every one of them from their current location to "0000 - None" you would have to click each and every one of them and manually change the data in each and every one of them.

Now... think how easy this would be if my enhancements to WitP editors are existing?

So... what do you think gentleman?

Matrix/2By3 is this something we, possibly, can expect from future WitP editors?

Vrery Cool, though I have only been tinkering with the editor for around a week , now I agree that this would realy help spead things up a bit.

I'd be happy if we could export to csv and then back. That way I could use excel to do something like... add 10% to all bomb damage at once or something like that.

That would make things so much easier. No need to add en masse change ability/more sorting/abitlity to increase/decrease by set or random amounts.

All that is already in excel.

My guess is not. But there's no reason you couldn't make an editor with that functionality yourself.

Thanks (and you are one of the "ordinary" WitP users who used editors the most)! [;)]

The problem is that it can not be straightforward export of data because numbers itself are 100% useless (i.e. database contains raw numbers in some range and we would not have any idea what certain number is doing - is it type denominator or value...

IMHO the only way to do this is to ask Matrix/2By3 to expand the WitP editor capabilities...

P.S.
Believe me I know what I am talking about - I started Falcon4 user editing and crated first usable editor for it (Excel with VBA).

Regarding the database, are the aircraft Max Airspeed and Cruise Speed in knots(as stated in editor manual) or in mph as it appears they have been input in the database???[&:][&:][&:]

Which value does the game engine use? knots or mph when calculating results (you know, flying stuff[8|]).

Odds are it simply compares them against each other to see who gets the advantage, it wouldn't matter if one was 1200 and the other was 1100 ... that would be the same as 300 vs 200.

Thanks. I think you are correct as far as top speed would possibly be used in a dogfight. However, if knots used, it will calculate out to a greater Endurance value than if mph is used(from the formula in the Editor manual). Perhaps one of the Devs can clarify this for me/us. Perhaps, the game engine can use either value ????
