The Big One! - Grraven Vs. JonHal

Post by Jon_Hal »

My opponent and I have been playing UV since March and recently started a WiTP game. Once again my capable opponent takes up the Japanese armed forces while I will control the Allies. What follows is an account of Scen. 15 The Total War. Just a little about me. I’ve played UV on and off since it came off. Engaged in several play by email games and just purchased WiTP. I’m playing a Allies vs. Japanese AI game as well but this will be my first and probably only PBEM WiTP game for a while. Much like the Allies in WW2 I will be learning the details of the war as I go. So hopefully, in a Year or three, I will see you in Japan, accepting the Japanese surrender. Until then…

December 7th, 1941…. A date that will, yet again, live in infamy.

Pearl Harbor… Air Raid!

Surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. No, really, I saw it coming.

It could have been a lot worse. The Japanese did get a lot of Torpedo hits. No telling what the Japanese Carrier fleet’s intentions are for tomorrow. Will they stick around or will the fall back?

Wake Island

Naval bombardment of Wake Island proceeded an invasion of the tiny Island. Japanese warships dueled with Allied shore guns.

The brave defenders of Wake Island held back the Japanese Invaders for a single day before falling in mass to the Japanese hordes

Meanwhile Clark’s Field and Singapore fall under massive air attack, almost a hundred Nells cloud the skies over Singapore. Taking a massive toll on the destroying many planes on the ground.

Landings happen all over the P.I. and Malaya, While a Japanese Carrier force takes station south of the Philippines to take out retreating ships.

My opening strategy is just to be where Grraven isn't. I have no idea what I am doing in China and India. I guess I will have to play those areas by ear. Hopefully I won't do to bad trying to defend those areas.

Not much I can do about Pearl right now but just hope that the Japanese continue to lose those High experience pilots. Especially the Kate pilots. I’d rather them get shot down over Pearl then attacking my Flattops.

In Malaya my pilots are making a dismal performance with several Japanese surface and transport groups in the area I get NO hits.

In the P.I. the transports begin to get the heck out of dodge. B-17’s and some P-40’s begin transferring to the South and leave the Philippines, pledging revenge.

Japanese capture Legaspi, Aparri, and Vigan

While heavy fighting for Brunei, Yenen, Khota Bharu and Hong Kong continue.

Convoys on the west coast start to form up and get ready to start hauling troops and supplies to Pearl as soon as the Japanese Carriers depart.

Not to much to do except extract my carriers and get them to a safe haven.

Well seems like most of the Japanese Carriers finally retired from Peal today, or at least withdrew for refueling. Only a Zero fighter sweep over the Harbor today. Now begins the long process of picking up the shattered remains of my fleet. Still. Even with all the damage I only lost 1 Battleship sunk. Though 2 other battleships are at over 80% system damage.

In the Philippines and DEI allied surface fleets move out to engage the invading Japanese. However the POW and Repulse manage to pull back and escape the Japanese Trap, setting course for Trincolme.

The Japanese continue to land troops at Khota Bharu.

The only highlight of the turn was the bombers out of Singapore report hitting a Japanese Cruiser with a torpedo.

Fierce ground combat continues at Khota Bharu and Yenen. While more Japanese troops continue to unload at Kendari.

Nells and Bettys fill the skies over both Clark’s Field and Singapore. Doing minimal damage but the interceptors there do nothing in slowing the Japanese planes.

I begin to put together a British Carrier task force to see if I can relieve some of the pressure from Malaya.

Dec 12th

I think that KB finally has departed PEarl and the local area.. hopefully!

It was a good day for the Dutch air force. Dutch pilots braved the defending claudes and managed to punch a 250lb bomb through the deck of the Hosho.

Meanwhile surface forces managed to slip into Kendari and hit the Transports but little damage was done. I guess they were in a rush to get out of there as a Japanese surface group, including 2 BBs pounded Kendari later that night.

Meanwhile the Japanese Surface group that missed my light Cruiser force at Kendari does find my transports trying to escape and it’s ugly…

CL Kinu
CL Kitakami

AK Bengalen, Shell hits 17, and is sunk
AK Liran, Shell hits 12, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
AP Van Imhoff, Shell hits 21, and is sunk

In other news the daily Japanese bomber swarms appeared over Singapore and Clark’s Field again. Again not much damage was done and most of the Allied planes stayed grounded or, in the case of Clark’s Field, moved to safer bases.
The Allied air force at Singapore attacked a Japanese Surface group in the AM but failed to hit any of the fast moving Japanese ships. In the Afternoon they were more lucky finding a transport group and hitting a MSW and AK.

Day Air attack on TF, near Kuantan at 24,47

A few thoughts about playing the Japanese.

First I must admit that Xargun has been holding my hand through most of the opening moves. I took Kendari early and have parked several Betty's and Nell's there to interdict shipping in the DEI. So far it has worked nicely.

I pulled the KB away from PH a day sooner that I would've liked as my Kates were really starting to take some serious losses. I am only mildly pleased at my PH results.

The PI situation is going well IMO. I have secured the northern bases and have started to move in shorter ranged planes to help surpress Manilla and Clark. With these bases I now have the ability to move in some more troops to take Luzon. I have isolated Mindinao and am going to let that wither some before assulting there. With the kendari base and the bases in northern Luzon and Palau no shipping should be able to get in or out.

Malaya. (sigh) this has been a major boondoggle for me. I have all the eastern bases and Mersing on the west. I have isolated several units in northern Malaya cutting them off from Singapore, I know this will help in taking the city sooner but the price paid has been high. Jon moved 2 units of the AVG down to Singapore and they have lived up to their reputaion. [:(]. I have started moving in Oscars, Sally's and Lilly's to help the beleagured Nell's. My zero's have been staying equal to the task of the P-40's however I was hoping they would do better than they have shown so far.

This is just the beginning of my narritive on my experince of playing the Empire. As more turns are posted by Jon I will comment when it doesn't give away strategy.

P.S. any constuctive comments are more than welcome.

Once Again the Nells return over Clark Field. Escorts do more damage then the bombers. Shooting down a couple of remaining P-40s

In Singapore the air force there scores again on the invading Japanese. It’s not many bomb hits but I figure every little bit helps.

Tankers in the DEI begin to get underway and head towards Oz now that the JApanese Baby carrier force has pulled out.

I think this game is a great learning experience for both Grraven and I. Hopefully this AAR can help newer players and even give some of the old hands here a few chuckles at my obvious inexperience. [:)]

Dec 15th

Well, the first week of the war is down and I need to look at what is going on.. I’m falling back all over the map. The KB has left the pearl area and fading back into the Fog that it struck from. Kendari has fallen to a quick invasion and I know that Grraven will be stationing bombers there soon to cut off all escape from the Philippines.

Today marks the first Japanese incursion into old UV territory with troops landing a Rabaul and the Shortlands. Landing also occur at Mersing. Air Raids in Hong Kong and Khota Bharu hit those bases hard.

Japanese Bombers swarm over Singapore and Hong Kong . Meanwhile the Singapore air force has an ok day, putting a torp into an AP.

Day Air attack on TF at 23,51

Buffalo I x 3
Vildebeest IV x 7

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AP Miyako Maru
AP Teia Maru, Torpedo hits 1

Japanese ground losses:

Guns lost 1

Ground combat continues for Hong Kong, Yenen, Khota Bharu and Rabaul.

The Japanese Capture Tavoy. Convoys and singlew ships are still trickling out of the P.I and D.E.I.

Allied commanders are alarmed to see the Japanese Landings at Rabaul and Shortlands but we have no assets to send to the area. Carriers are out of place, escorting crippled battleships back to Pearl and even if they were in range I wouldn’t risk an attack with the KB still unaccounted for.

While trying to save some oil a lone tanker is caught by the Japanese… Poor guys didn’t have a chance.

Day Time Surface Combat, near Palembang at 20,55

Japanese Ships

Sub attack at 107,84

Allied Ships

Things don’t look good at Yenen as the Japanese Army manages to reduce the fortifications to 0. Don’t know how much longer they can hold out.

The Japanese also take Khota Bharu this turn.

Japanese Troops land on Gili Gili today.. Moving closer to Oz. Meanwhile troops continue to put up a fierce battle for Rabaul but it’s only a matter of time before the Japanese take the base.

Nells show up Over Clark Field today. Again hitting the airstrip but doing minor damage. Nells also bomb Hong Kong.

The Singapore Airforce takes wing today with a vengence and hits in the morning

Today marks the first flight of the Swordfish Squadron from the British Carrier. I didn’t want to risk a carrier close to Malaya but I transferred the high experience squadron to Singapore. They score two torp hits today.

However the Airwar is not one sided and the Bettys make a strike against more escaping transports..

Day Air attack on TF, near Macassar at 30,69

A6M2 Zero x 18
G4M1 Betty x 15

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships

AK Sipirok, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

The Japanese Land troops on Malacca and Kiska island. Heavy fighting continues in Mersing and Rabaul. The Japanese capture Naga base and in Nanchang the Japanese chase out the Chinese.

Not a bad day for the allies, not bad but not great. I’m still being rolled back across the board but the Air Force in Singapore keeps getting better, hitting several transports today.

Excellent Guys. More info from others to sharpen my ideas with.

Jon - having Kendari taken is a cast Iron sod but not the end of the world. As soon as Graven starts to move his baby carriers West of Bali you will find it hard to get shipping down to Oz. Remember you can evacuate resources and such to India as well. I like the use of the AVG in Singapore - a wee transference down there when PzB gets ready to help his units with airpower might be the go.

Thanks Wobby. I appreciate any advice at this stage of the game. [:)] I must admit I didn't put to much imporatnce on Kendari until I saw those Transports heading that way. I tried to dog him with my mixed CL and DD sqaudrons but with those Battleships he had covering the invasion it was a lost cause.
Once Grraven gets Zeros over Singapore in any serious number then I'm in trouble. However I should enjoy the good hunting while I can.

Nice AAR , Got to say i love the salient points being cut n pasted rather than the entire 'pages and pages' of combat reports.. much easier to read for my tired old eyes [:)]

As a predominately jap player (ai only so far) a good sub blocade in the bay of bengal , basically diamond head and also sri-lanka if you have enough can yield good results for little loss .. also continued bombing of singapore i find a waste ,, better to attack ground targets and cause disruption to reduce your land losses IMO.

Great idea with the AVG BTW [:D] sneaky one that .. hehe .. I find that zeros are getting slaughtered by the AVG in china so don't despair if the japs send more down ..

As allies HOLD port moresby at all costs IMO .. its a great stepping stone for later LBA as you probably already know from playing UV [;)]..

OK i'll stop trying to teach my grandmother to suck eggs and just say thanks for taking the time to post .. v v enjoyable read ..and good luck to both sides
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

Thanks Rob. I too get tired of reading the whole AAR so I thought that you guys would enjoy just the coolest bits. I can't devulge all my strategies yet as I know Ggraven is reading this AAR too, but in time I will reveal the interesting info like where my Carriers are hiding, Etc...
Good point about the AVG holding it's own against the Japanese Zeros in China.. GGraven has been threating to send some of KB and it's high experience pilots over to singapore and "take care" of the AVG. That wouldn't be a pretty picture for the AVG.

Again thanks for reading!

The Allied Silent service scores today. Not big but it’s something to cheer about. Any Damage to ships running back and forth from Malaya can’t help Grraven at all.

Sub attack at 40,68

Japanese Ships
AP Sunten Maru, Shell hits 4, on fire

Allied Ships
SS Porpoise

Meanwhile the Singapore air force hits another convoy. Scoring hits on 3 APs! Today marks the first deployment of the AVG to Singapore. Now I just have to wait for the Nells to show up again and give them a real “what for”

Day Air attack on TF, near Malacca at 22,47

Allied aircraft
Swordfish x 4
Buffalo I x 14
Vildebeest IV x 3
Blenheim I x 19
Blenheim IV x 7
Hudson I x 3
P-40B Tomahawk x 11

Allied aircraft losses
Vildebeest IV: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
PG Sozan Maru
AP Teia Maru, heavy damage
AP Yamakisan Maru
PC Shonan Maru #6
AP Ryoyo Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AP Sanura Maru, Torpedo hits 1, heavy damage
AP Miyako Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire

However the Japanese find and hit my Crippled tanker that he hit the previous day. Having those Japanese in Kendari is proving to be a major headache!

Day Air attack on TF at 30,71

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 18
G4M1 Betty x 10

No Japanese losses

Allied Ships
TK Angelina, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
Air strikes occur at Alor Star, Hong Kong, Changsha and Clark’s Field.

Japanese Capture Tulagi! (geez when did they get there?) , Kiska, Malacca and Gili Gili

Fighting Continues in Hong Kong.. (Where I am now reduced to fort level 3!) and Ichang. The Defenders of Rabaul hold out another day but they are beginning to realize that no re-enforcements will be coming their way.

Looking on this day I have made only a few offensive moves and meet with mixed results so far. my surface groups did little to slow the invasion of Kendari and I will be paying for that now. Deploying some of the AVG and the Swordfish from the British Carrier at Singapore should hinder Ggraven’s invasion of Malaya.. Or at least slow him down a little. The B-17s in Derby will begin night runs on Kendari and see if they can produce anything.

Well.. One sub falls to Japanese ASW around Malaya but then another Allied sub scores.. Hitting one of Ggraven’s precious Tankers

Sub attack at 40,52

Japanese Ships
TK Mitu Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
PG Muro Maru
MSW W.6

Allied Ships
SS KXIV

Having the Swordfish at Singapore comes in handy with them putting a torp into the Kongo. It was costly though.. losing a couple of the precious Swordfish.

Day Air attack on TF, near Mersing at 23,49

Allied aircraft
Swordfish x 8
Buffalo I x 21
Blenheim I x 9
Blenheim IV x 10
Hudson I x 8
P-40B Tomahawk x 18

Allied aircraft losses
Swordfish: 4 destroyed, 1 damaged
Blenheim I: 2 damaged
Blenheim IV: 3 damaged

Japanese Ships
BB Kongo, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Akatsuki
CA Takao
CA Atago

Of course the Japanese respond with beating up an innocent Transport just trying to escape.

Day Air attack on TF, near Koepang at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 18
G4M1 Betty x 23

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 1 damaged

Allied Ships
AP Mijer, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
AD Black Hawk

On the Ground it doesn’t look that pretty.. Rabaul, Changsa and Tarawa fall to the Japanese. While Hong Kong is reduced to only 2 forts..

Japanese troops land at Tarakan

Not to good today.. but of course there is always tomorrow.
