What to do with AVD, AS, AD's etc.

I find no purpose for these various classes, they don't carry any cargo and they are not heavily armed, what do you guys suggest?

AS ships allow you to re-arm subs at small ports (under size 8) if they have enough supplies.

AD ships allow you to re-arm surface ships with torpedoes at small ports (under size 8) if enough supplies are avail.

AR ships help with repairs. Any size port.

AVD have not used them, so can not tell you.

AVD is a converted Destroyer into a Sea Plane Tender. Send along a small AK or few APD's to a far away beach hex or forward base you have no Aviation support on, unload teh cargo, dock or disband teh AVD at the beach or base and fly in up to 18 seaplanes per AVD/AV and start looking for bad guys.

AS- Sub tender. if you want to operate any subs from anything but a large port, you want an AS. THey Help repair subs and will allow subs to operate and load torpedoes from small bases.

AD's- Destroyer Tender- These ships help repair Destroyers and other small ships and will allow DD's CLS's and such load torpedoes at bases with 20K supply regardless of size.

AR- Repair Ship, this is a mobile repair yard, I think it's value is obvious. It will increase a Port LEvel by 1. You can only get the benifit of 4 per hex. SO Have a Size one port near your tip of teh Spear? Got some damaged ships? Park 4 AR's at that size 1 port and it now acts as a Size 5 port, it will save ships.

MLE- Mine Warfare tender, this lets you supply ML/DM ships with mines at ports less than size 9 . All you need is 20K in supply and viola they can load ML/DM with mines. Remember those ML/DM have short legs so runnign back to Brisbane/PH/Colombo for mines can be a real pain, nto to mention not very effective.

If you want to know what others do, ask.

AVDs let you use float planes in locations that do not have an airfield. Just look at them as small AVs. They were destroyers that were refitted to be float plane tenders.

AVD's are good ASW platforms, and you can use them to supplement aviation support for floatplanes at any port. This leaves more space at the airfield for LBA assets.[;)]

Do you have to run recon to spot the AV/Ds when they're stationed on an island dot, or disbanded in a small port ?

Depends. The game will conviently place an airbase symbol on any base with aircraft there, so you will know if planes are there. And I believe if any ships are in port it places a port symbol there. So any size 3 or bigger port you can tell if any enemy ships are in port, but still need recon to see TF's.
Favoritism is alive and well here.

If they are disbanded in a port they appear as an anchor icon. If they are supporting a/c that are in excess of their intrinsic capacity, the a/c will appear as an airfield icon. So your enemy will pretty much know that something is there....that doesn't mean they are not useful though, you just have to be ready to run.
