Using AVDs versus AVs in game??

Post by Buck Beach »

I can see where the AVs provide more aircraft support but was wanting some other ideas from other players as to how they utilize the different ships?

They stretch the range of your search aircraft by letting you set up a insta-base anywhere. Very useful to make up for the short ranges of the PBY's the Yanks have.

In this game, Intel is your most important asset. Anything that gives you more intel is worth it's weight in gold as it gives you more time to react.

These are probably my favourite types of ship.

Uses:-

Creation of instant floatplane airbases
Fast transport, which can be used to get to where you want the above to happen since you will need some supplies for the aviation support to work
AVDs only - ASW escort for convoys, if you're short

Some of the larger US AVs have vast endurance too which just adds to their utility.

But when do use the AVD instead of the AV or why the AV instead of the AVD?

Some of the AVD are fairly fast, up to 25 knots. Most of the AV are slow around 14 knots. So just depends where you want them and how long it takes to get there. Also the durability effects how many air cract can be supported, havent really looked to see difference between AV and AVD there.
Favoritism is alive and well here.

I look at it this way: AVs have a specific purpose (the "insta-base" noted above). AVDs can also do this, but can also do escort (convoy) and ASW quite well. I actually use them move as the latter two than as float-plane support.

In Real Life, AVs were intended to operate 2 squadrons of patrol aircraft and the AVD/AVPs were to operate 1 squadron in smaller, shallower harbors. Also AVs would also include stowage for spare wings and hulls. AVs were converted merchantmen or colliers (except for AV4 and AV5, which were designed as AVs), AVDs (aka 'Ballard' class) were converted flush-deck destroyers, and AVPs (aka 'Barnegat' class) were designed as AVPs (although there were 9 AVPs that were converted 'Bird' class mine-sweepers that don't appear in the game). The AVPs are those AVDs in the game that have a speed of 18 knots. The AVPs were often used as escorts for the AVs because of their long range afforded to them by their diesel engines and the ASW suite. AVPs were also good for independent operations in contested waters.

In the game, the three platforms are not differentiated except by speed and range.
