Fighter Sweeps?

Post by john martino »

Guys I have attempted Sweeps with fighters and never get a combat repot that enemy men are lost. I send the fighters in at low level (1000 ft.) but never get any results stating that a number of enemies have been killed. I am sending them at gound units! Any suggestions?

I suggest you reconsider the altitude set up for your squadrons if you want to engage a dogfight against enemy aircrafts.
As IJN player I have always sent my Zero squadrons over PM in a sweep mission at an altitude of 15,000 or 16,000 ft.
It works perfectly and a lot of allied aircrafts are shot down; the result of such a mission is also subjected to local weather because it will be difficult to detect enemy planes and attack them if it is cloudy.

I don't know as I have never use my fighters for this purpose but I think it should be possible. This kind of mission is likely to be very risky if a lot of AAA units are located at the concerned base because your fighters will dive at an altitude of 100 ft in order to proceed to their strafing: you should expect a lot of damaged and losses for your squadrons for a quite unconsistant result.

As I said I never get any results of my fighter units and enemy gound loses. All I get is a result screen that notes that the fighters have flown over the assigned target. I have attempted this over bases that have large enemy gound units! Can anyone else comment??

Set your sweeps at 200 ft and make sure they are at 60% - 70% experience
levels, also rotate sqdrns each turn as the fatuige level goes up tremendously.
you can use your level bombers especially the B25J's set in this manner against
shipping and they will skip bomb shipping as well as tear them up with thier fifty's.

The purpose for the fighter sweep is usually to draw enemy fighters up. A higher altitude means they have to climb to get to you. Altitude is the advantage in air to air combat.

Setting fighters at 100ft will make the fighters strafe.

Every plane set to 100 ft, uses it's FOWARD firing weapons to strafe. More weapons, more damage. At least that is my experience on the issue. Especially effective models are B-25J and Beaufighter. Both have massive firepower firing foward.
