AAR - PBEM Game "Case Geld"

Post by paullus99 »

Here is a new PBEM 4-Player game with the latest build. This campaign pits myself & Maurice as the Axis against Oleg & Becket as the allies. Should be very interesting.....

Germany - Spring 1940

The campaign begins.....typical moves into Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands & France. Some armor was damaged, but we are confident that will not prevent our future operations from going forth.

Some forces were moved into North Africa & we are building up for phase II of our operations in Europe.

I am really looking forward to this one...

Axis fanboys and "game balance sceptics" may be pleased - Maurice and Paullus are IMO right now best WAW players among the beta testers, and Becket and myself are solid players, and I'm really interested to see how are we going to hold vs. them. Part of me hopes they will prove Axis victory is quite doable when Axis is played by experts. The other part of me of course hopes my team will win.

Also, I enjoy playing as WA - so many things to do! Oceans keeping those Axis brutes away! So many possibilities for screwing things up! [:D] Great fun!

Anyway, Paullus, are you sure you wanted to call this game "Case Geld"? IIRC Geld is Money in German, perhaps you meant Fall Gelb (Case Yellow)? [8|]

Well 2 things have changed dramatically from the Akula Game for the Japanese: Subs have been fixed so that they don't have unlimited torpedoes and Oleg found out the WA's live and die by there Transport chain. I doubt this game will see the "successes" i saw in Akula.

I did the typical JA first turn; occupied FIC and transfered all my aircraft to China.

Actually, for all those Axis Fanboys - Case Geld has been floated in What If forums as the name of the German Operation culminating in the Invasion of the United States.....

Ach so! I didn't know that, I stand corrected. I guess you already started work on improving range of your heavy bombers [:D]

Soviets: Spring, 1940

The big question for me as the Soviet player is "when will Germany attack"? Paullus and I know each other's playstyles for the Soviet war pretty well, and I know I'm in for trouble this time (can't hope for salvation through an early Italian invasion).

Therefore, I have put my entire effort into maximizing defense. There is a cost to this: I will not be able to launch many counterattacks when the time comes, because of supply issues. From past experience, however, I believe holding the line to be more important.

China, Spring 1940:

We moved a lot of our forces to the front lines, in an attempt to forestall more Japanese invasions. This is the first time I've played as China, so it should be an experience. [;)]

I started doing my usual opening WA moves: occupation of southern Persia and Afghanistan (Afgh. being nothing but a waste of supply points as already explained here on board). S. Persia resource is immediatelly repaired. I sent some colonial militias to Sudan and Kenya, in preparation to attack Italian East Africa in the next turn.

I am reluctant to send troops from Britain to help defending Egypt, as I assume Paullus might be trying Sea Lion.

So, since I noticed Axis are massing some forces in the North Africa, decided to hit them there (if possible). To be able to bring Force H in Central Med, I had to deal with two sub flotillas in West Med (see picture). *Luckily* some sub bugs are *fixed*, and subs without torps are truely harmless now as they should be. So I first sent some DDs to fight it out with subs, then Force H sailed to Central Med, along with Med Fleet from Alexandria and some additional forces. There was a huge naval battle and results are visible on second screen.

We also started the most ambitious research program in my personal history of beta testing this game. We are researching:

- Infantry evasion (it's easy now this early into the game, to push it to at least 6 or 7)
- Infantry land attack (same logic)
- Armored evasion (same logic)
- Armored land attack (same logic, I want my Shermans with a bit more punch when they face Paullus' Mega Alien Technology Super Panzers)
- Artillery land attack (just for the fun of it)
- Carrier air torpedo anti ship attack (I have "3" at start, I think Japanese start with "5" or "4")
- Heavy bomber anti sub attack (when this factor reaches 3 or 4 it makes heavy bombers very effective sub killers, and I am going to need it)
- Heavy bomber land attack (latest versions brought a new rule! *whichever* side gets heavy air land attack to factor 11 is assumed to have the atomic bomb! yeah baby... no secrets here, I am going for The Bomb)
- Light fleet sub attack (no need to explain)
- Sub evasion
- Sub torpedos

Germany - Summer 1940

Well, our Italian allies once again prove useless in battle. We were able to save one sub, which will refuel & prepare for our Atlantic push....Sealion or not to Sealion, that is the question....

We hit Yugoslavia & repaired the captured resources there. We also used our air to damage a light fleet off England & some transports as well. It will be interesting to see where this goes....

Soviets, Summer 1940:

A little primer on pre-war Soviet production. I don't have much. Okay, so what does this mean? Well, you'll recall that I put a lot of artillery into the queue last turn, and those units are due to be produced this turn. They are currently occupying all but 8 of my 26 production points. I used 6 of that excess to research armor attack (a woeful 6 for the Soviets) and infantry evasion (a woeful 4). Armor attack will be raised to 7 after this turn, but infantry evasion is still several turns from an increase (research costs more the more units you have, and I have a lot of infantry to start the game, but few armor units). The final two points went into my pitiful supply hopper.

Here's the screen showing production. The military units in the Soviet queue were put there last turn and will be produced this turn as noted above. This is one of the most important screens in the game -- here is where you can get a glimpse of what your opponent may be planning, and try to counter him.

China, Summer 1940:

A plucky youth named Chen Zhen raised spirits today when he defeated all the martial artists at a Japanese dojo in one of the conquered provinces. I tell you, that story will make a great movie!

Anyway, not much happening, except Japan appears to be preparing for a major offensive.

Why are you allowed to monitor opponents' production? Isn't that supposed to be secret, covered with "fog of war"? Hitler would have been glad if he knew for the existance of T 34s and KV 1s before he launched Barbarossa.

We're playing with FoW off - since we need to be able to see what we are testing.

That is some serious investment in Research. What impact will it have on your troop strentghs and efforts in the near term?

We'll see I guess [:D]

I don't need many military units right away (except in UK), so I guess I can spend on research.

Wow, this game got interesting very fast (for WA standards). Paullus will most probably wait till his subs are researched to advanced levels, build them, and then unleash massive Uboat campaign in the Atlantic. I have to be prepared when that time comes. That means not only researching anti-sub capabilities of various weapons, but also supplying UK and their possesions while I still can do that relatively easy.

Keeping Egypt, and stopping any possible German advance towards Middle East is my primary task now. One of the starting German sub flotillas went hunting after my transports off the African coast. (This is rarely seen from our screenshots, but WA starts the game with a "chain" of transports all around Africa). Having no DD fleets to protect this route, I retreated 4-5 transport fleets to the security of South African ports, which effectively closed this transport route (he forced me to do that with just one damned sub flotilla!)

There are three ways to support Egypt early for WA:

a) transports from India (pro: can bring whatever is produced in India, hard to reach for Axis subs and far from their bases; con: India can't produce much: a unit or two every other turn, and some supplies)

b) transport chain from UK all around the Africa and Cape Good Hope thru Red Sea to Egypt and ME (pro: fine while it works; con: very vulnerable, and usually attacked in the opening turns of the game - you lose one transport, and whole "chain" is unusable - that's what Paulus did in this game, and my whole "chain" retreated to SA ports to avoid further damage, I don't have many DD fleets to play cat and mice with his subs that far from home)

c) transport chain via Med (pro: relatively short way, you can bring whatever is produced in big centres in UK and US; con: you have to fight with the Italians and run the gauntlet of Axis Med subs and Stukas)

d) there is a possibility of transport linkup with Australia, but I am usually reluctant to do that - Australians will be needed vs. the Japanese

What was my point with all this? Don't know, I forgot... [>:]

Anyway, only a) worked for me in this turn. I retreated some Med fleet assets towards Alexandria, cause I noticed he transferred some Stukas to South Italy. We completed the occupation of Persia (sorry Becket, nothing left for ya [8|]) We also crushed Italian resistance in AOI (losing one colonial militia unit in the process).

We find it hard to sustain our gigantic research effort in full so only selected areas of research got the funding this turn (atomic bomb here we come )

Germany - Fall 1940

I'm trying a few different tactics this time around to see how it plays out - having been on the receiving end of an early invasion last game. This turn, I repositioned some of my air & the rest of the army to start phase II of operations.

We know we have to strike hard & fast to keep out opponents off balance for the longest period of time. We will attrit the Royal Navy has much as possibe & attempt to sever the Atlantic Supply lines - there are some surprises in store for my adversaries this time around.
