Why no review?

How come no site or mag has reviewd WiTP? Not even Wargamer.com. Because it's not boxed?

I wrote a review for our local Croat magazine - on 5 full pages it's the biggest and most positive review I ever wrote in my 10 years of IT journalism [:D]

I'll post a link to PDF once the article gets published in the magazine (early October). No one (except for a couple of my Croat mates who buy the magazine anyway) won't understand a thing, but I bet seeing WITP praised of 5 magazine pages will be a nice sight to some [:D]

Does it matter what the big magazines think? All you have to do is search these boards for the best (or worst) reviews that could ever be written.

Actually CBS has a review of this game:

"I have played the game and it is God's gift to the Gaming World"

Signed, Me, The Pope

(This is typed on the Pope's own typewriter and anyone who questions me on that will go straight to Perdition.)

Signed Me Dan, er, I mean, "The Pope."

Wouldn't put too much store in that guy's reviews, I heard he was strictly a FPS fan. Surprised he found the time to write such a long review with Doom3 out. [;)]

Not only are that Pope guy's reviews short and pithy, they are also Infallible.

Probably because it's not broad enough to attract the general audience. I don't find a lot of passion out there for understanding actual history or strategy. Besides, the depth and scale of the game would simply overwhelm the general audience and I suspect, more than a few reviewers as well.

Which in my mind is a good thing as we'd have to dumb it down to become another RTS click-fest with generic "fighter" and "bomber" units. [:-] Or as an analogy Ben Affleck's recent Pearl Harbor movie.

Ben Affleck's recent Pearl Harbor movie

"My favorite part of the Game was when Ben married J Lo on the deck of the Akagi just before the big dance number"

Actually I'm surprised that they didn't cast Matt Damon as this troubled GI who also happens to be a mathematical genius who can break codes (and skulls) in his sleep. Somehow I think he'd be perfect in that role.

Actually I am surprised anyone with the intelligence to play and enjoy this game actually went to that schlock movie. But I guess some people get dragged to such affairs by their wives and girlfriends [:)]

Actually I'm an MST3K fan and as such I love to watch (rental or cable of course) BAD movies, and crucify them naturally. I loved the scene where the Japanese bombed the Spruance Class Destroyers. At first I could swear they were doing a "Final Countdown" scene by accident (visions of 100+ Tomahwks turning the Japanese carriers into twisted steel danced in my head) until I realized that even the big budget movies have to cut some CGI corners somewhere.

Well, MST3K marks you as an individual of taste and discrimitation.
The difference is, when MST3K shows a Ben Affleck movie you are rolling on the floor laughing. [:D]

Funny, someone showed me a online review of Sims2 (www.actiontrip.com/reviews/thesims2_2.phtml), its rated as having a high learning curve[:D]. I think WITP is way way over the head of most reviewers now days.

Well, I wanted to give the movie a fair chance--I was willing to give some lattitude for historical inaccuracies, but when it degenerated into downright silliness and cliches I wrote it off. Unfortunately, a friend of mine and her daughter think it's one of the greatest movies ever made, so I'm occasionally tortured, er, I mean, forced to watch it again. I even broke down and bought my friend the special edition for her birthday, after her copy was stolen. [8|]

I won't recap the laughable errors and implausibilites in the movie (unless there's someone lucky enough not to have seen it and wants to know), but I do have to admit that there were two parts I liked--the part where Rafe goes to fight with the RAF, and the parts with FDR. I was particularly impressed that they included the entire "date which will live in infamy" speech--it's almost worth buying the DVD just to watch that.

I have a stock answer I use every time anyone asks me my opinion about Pearl Harbor, even though I doubt they'll take my advice. I tell them, "Rent Tora! Tora! Tora! and Thirty Seconds over Tokyo to get the real story." [:)]

I suspect CGW will get around to reviewing it eventually--they are fairly good about reviewing wargames, and they did review UV (albeit they gave it only three stars).

O.

Great to hear that article is done!

BTW, did you include in it the Japanese poems I send you (last messages from Japanese commander when his Island is about to fall)?

I'm writing a (very good [:D]) review for an Italian site:NetWargamingItalia.
The thing is, before you write a review you are supposed to know the game [;)] and I feel I barely scratched the surface.
Probably there are others on the way, but the writers need time to make up his mind.
