WitP Utility - beta available.

Post by Bodhi »

OK, running out of time today and there are still a few issues that arose on testing with a small lap-top, but I'd thought I'd release this version so you can help find the remaining problems. [;)]

The download (link at the bottom) is a zip file, and there's a readme in the zip.
A (very) short manual will be installed with the program, so look in the folder you choose.

Issues outstanding (that I'm aware of)
  • This version only works for Win2000/WinXP
  • Map portion of the report window possibly smaller than optimum
  • If autogame save archive on, mulitple game save files may be made

Hope you find it useful. Please post any problems or ideas here.

Outstanding tool! However, I have some problems with it:

- Op-Reports don't seem to work at all. (Intel works fine!)

- "Game Entry/Edit" dialog doesn't allow change of game date. "Save" is greyed out. Can only be cancelled. Sometimes "cancel" doesn't work either and the window can neither be closed nor edited because all options appear to be frozen.

- In WITP Manager Options dialog there is no button so save the changes. All changes stay at default settings.

- In order to update the reports in WITP Intel/Ops Report there should be a refresh button in that window. If I go back to the utility and click on "report" to refresh" and don't close the report window before a second window will be opened.

- I would like to see the possibility to resize the report window.

Hi Nico,

Thanks for the comments.
ORIGINAL: nico71

Outstanding tool! However, I have some problems with it:

- Op-Reports don't seem to work at all. (Intel works fine!)

Working here so no obvious problem.

Do you have both operationsreport.txt and com_operationsreport.txt files in the main WitP Save folder?
Do you have a com_operationsreport.txt file in the XXX folder (XXX is the game save slot number) sub folder of the Save folder?
Any clues in the TraceLog.txt file in the utility program folder?
Anyone else having this problem?

- "Game Entry/Edit" dialog doesn't allow change of game date. "Save" is greyed out. Can only be cancelled. Sometimes "cancel" doesn't work either and the window can neither be closed nor edited because all options appear to be frozen.

The program does some basic sanity checks before allowing the "game" to be saved. These are done after you finish editing a field. Try tabing to the next field, or clicking on another field to get the "save" button active.

As for lock ups, what field(s) are you editing when it happens?
Is WitP running when you make the changes?
Note that changing the scenario, save game slot or game date with the report form loaded will cause a reload of all the scenario data and intel/ops reports which may take some time to complete. I'll check that I have an hourglass cursor running on the edit form to indicate this is happening, and add a comment to the status bar.

- In WITP Manager Options dialog there is no button so save the changes. All changes stay at default settings.

This form contains the config settings applied when you start the program. Changes are written to the start up config file when you exit the form, so there's no need for a save button. However, when you open the form, some settings are set to the current options. For instance, if you are currently NOT autoarchiving game save files, this option will be set to off on the form when it's opened. Changing the settings on the options form should be remembered and applied when you start the program. Try changing the settings to what you want, then restart the program.
(The "Export Only Valid Rows From Scenario Database Files" option is not currently saved in the start up configuration file, but would be applied if the exports were functioning correctly.)
- In order to update the reports in WITP Intel/Ops Report there should be a refresh button in that window. If I go back to the utility and click on "report" to refresh" and don't close the report window before a second window will be opened.

The reports should auto refesh if there is new data when the report options section is activated. Clicking the report button again shouldn't cause a second form to open, and I'll fix that to force a refresh of the report. There was a refesh button on the report form until the last round of tinkering when I added the auto refresh. Maybe I'll put it back.
- I would like to see the possibility to resize the report window.

So would I, it's on the ToDo list.

Is this intended only for use against the AI? I can not put a name in the opponents box.

/edit Oops, figured it out. I thought the new button was for a new game, not new opponent.

Do you have both operationsreport.txt and com_operationsreport.txt files in the main WitP Save folder?

Operationsreport.txt is there, but no com_operationsreport.txt. There are only the usual four report files created by WITP.

Do you have a com_operationsreport.txt file in the XXX folder (XXX is the game save slot number) sub folder of the Save folder?

Yes, there are four text-files: com_operationsreport.txt, com_combatreport.txt, com_asigint.txt and com_jsigint.txt
Any clues in the TraceLog.txt file in the utility program folder?

The TraceLog.txt is emtpy!
The program does some basic sanity checks before allowing the "game" to be saved. These are done after you finish editing a field. Try tabing to the next field, or clicking on another field to get the "save" button active.

That did the trick, but only once! When I tried it a second time, all fields were frozen. Could only kill it in task manager!
As for lock ups, what field(s) are you editing when it happens?

As far as I can tell at the moment it seems to happen if I try to change the date for a second time! (See above) Will test it further. Didn't check the other fields so far.
Is WitP running when you make the changes?

Last time WITP did run, this time when I checked it again before I write my post here it didn't run, but the window still freezes.
Note that changing the scenario, save game slot or game date with the report form loaded will cause a reload of all the scenario data and intel/ops reports which may take some time to complete. I'll check that I have an hourglass cursor running on the edit form to indicate this is happening, and add a comment to the status bar.

Tried it for a third time now just to make sure that I don't tell any rubbish here. I open the utility, select my current game, click on "edit", and change the date. Now I have to wait for a couple of seconds, then the "Save" button is available again. I click "save" and return to the main menu. I click "edit" for a second time, change the date, and now the app freezes for good! I have waited for a minute or so. The first time it was some 5-10 seconds when the loading operation was finished.

Checked that! You're right, it works after starting the utility again. I was confused when I entered the options dialog for a second time within the same session and didn't see the changes.

There were indeed two report windows open, one with old data, and one with new data. I did test this again tonight just to be on the safe side. I didn't see any auto-refresh happen, though. To get the new data, I had to close the report window and open it again. And that's just intel, no OP.

Ahhhh....that's an interesting discovery! I was playing a bit and all of a sudden I see my first Op-reps ever in the report dialog! At least some of them! The com_operations.txt-file is full of stuff, but none ever showed up. Now at least three of them showed up!

B-17C Fortress has spotted Shoho at 56,88

B-17C Fortress has spotted Umikaze at 55,88

B-17C Fortress has spotted Goyo Maru at 56,87

For comparison, here is the full rep for that particular turn:

OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR 06/05/42

Coastwatcher sighting: 4 Japanese ships at 64,92 , Speed 3 , Moving Northeast
Coastwatcher sighting: 1 Japanese ship at 56,87 , Speed 9 , Moving Northeast
Coastwatcher sighting: 8 Japanese ships at 54,87 , Speed 7 , Moving Northwest
Coastwatcher sighting: 1 Japanese ship at 60,88 , Speed 2 , Moving West
Coastwatcher sighting: 2 Japanese ships at 56,87 , Speed 10 , Moving Southwest
E14Y1 Glen sighting report: 3 Allied ships at 46,103 , Speed 13 , Moving West
B-17C Fortress sighting report: 9 Japanese ships at 56,88 , Speed 0
B-17C Fortress has spotted Shoho at 56,88
B-17C Fortress sighting report: 7 Japanese ships at 54,87 , Speed 6 , Moving Northwest
B-17C Fortress sighting report: 1 Japanese ship at 55,88 , Speed 7 , Moving West
B-17C Fortress has spotted Umikaze at 55,88
B-17C Fortress sighting report: 2 Japanese ships at 54,87 , Speed 4 , Moving Northwest
B-17C Fortress sighting report: 1 Japanese ship at 56,88 , Speed 8 , Moving Southwest
B-17C Fortress sighting report: 1 Japanese ship at 56,87 , Speed 7 , Moving Southwest

A few quick replies before I get down to work.

Ron, Bradfordkay.

Sorry about the delay for Win98. It will come as I'll mainly be playing on a WinME system. I'm as eager as you to get it done, but it'll take a while.[:(]

CobraAus,

Exception: I updated the file late last night. Hope I didn't upload the wrong one. Will check this evening when I get home. Exceptions within the program should be fully handled.

Win Installer - not needed for XP, it's already included in the OS.

Nico,

Seems we're making some progress. I had a fear that date changing may cause problems. However, you shouldn't need to change the date. If your game is already in progress, leave the default scenario start date when you enter a new "game". It should automatically update to the current game date after the next turn resolution (assuming you have the save intel/ops reports active). I may lock the date field in future editions.

Nomad,

Sorry, poor manual.[;)]

Updated the download file.

Two small changes
1. CSV exports of the main scenario database files should now be working.
2. Clicking the "Reports" button when the report form is already open should result in the Intel/Ops data being refreshed.

Any problems/comments/suggestions, please post here.

Very good work Bodhi! Just wondering now how on earth you get the time to play Witp, BTR and write this little gem? You got some kind of time freezing device there?

Glad you like the utility. Decided from the start to postpone playing WitP until the first major patch was out. So I just played around a bit and started to wonder how I could display the data I wanted. Looking forward to starting WitP proper now the disappearing leader bug seems to mostly cured.

As for BTR, haven't started it yet, it's currently somewhere between the UK and Japan, hopefully arriving anyday.

As for time, we're working over here while all you Europeans are sleeping! [:D]

Bodhi, I fear that there is still a problem! If I change the game slot, for example, I can activate the save-button by hitting TAB. When I save and go back to edit, and I change the game slot for a second time, the app freezes! So it's not just the date!

Re the Op-Reps, I did some testing! Is it possible that it is some parser or language setting prob? The utility only likes certain words in the report, anything else will be skipped!

One example:

The report - as shown above - shows only the B-17C reports, and only the short ones where a certain ship has been detected! It skips all the ones that have heading and speed information!

Now, if I change one of the lines from

B-17C Fortress sighting report: 9 Japanese ships at 56,88 , Speed 0

to

B-17C Fortress has spotted 9 Japanese ships

this line will show up in the op-report. It will also show up when I exchange the B-17 with the F-5.

It will NOT show up if I use "coastwatcher" or anything else! And it will also NOT show up if I put heading and speed info back into the line or the phrase "sighting report"!

hi bodhi,
your app is looking good! couldn't quite get it working correctly, however.

i created a save game for my current PBEM (scen 16, game slot 4, 10 Dec 41), but there doesn't appear to be anything in the op or intel report tabs....all the lines were blank. what happens if i get the date wrong in the create screen? i'm thinking it might actually be 11 Dec instead of the date i put in there...

exactly what files should be created in the game slot sub-folder of the WITP save game folder if everything is working correctly? the sub-folder gets created, but i don't see any files being placed in it.

when "deleting" a save game, am i actually deleting the file in the save slot? or just the files in the sub-folder?

keep up the good work [&o]

Hi Kwik,

When you enter a new "game" no intel or ops data will be seen until you resolve a turn in the game with the autosave of intel/ops reports option on. For a game in progress, the program won't be able to recover data from previous turns as these aren't available. As WitP uses one intel/ops/combat report file for all game save slots, the program will assume that any files that exists when a new "game" is added may belong to another game save slot so won't be used. So, as mentioned above, you need to end a turn in WitP and get the turn resolution running before you'll start to see intel/ops reports listed in the utility.

Don't worry about setting the date, it should automatically update to the current game date after the turn is resolved.

As for files, if everything is working correctly, after each turn resolution your should find:
a sub-folder XXX in the main WitP save folder, where XXX is the save slot number, and in that folder should be any autoarchive of game saves you've requested, as well as four text reports containing allied/japanese sig intel, ops reports and combat reports.

In the WitP Utility folder you should find three extra files, witpg.ytp and witpo.ytp containing the "games" and "opponents" you entered and a tracelog.txt error log (hopefully empty).

If you export scenario database files, the CSV files will be saved in the main WitP SCEN folder, numbered by scenario and named by data type.

Having said that, you shouldn't need to access any of these files manually.

Game deletion: the utility doesn't alter or delete ANY of the WitP files, including game saves. If you delete a "game" in the utility, it will just delete that game from the utility program. If you have the "Delete Game Save Files" option checked when deleting a "game" in the utility it will also delete any archived game save files made by the utility but NOT the game save file used by WitP. If you leave this unchecked, any game save files made by the utility may be renamed slightly, so that there should be no problem if you immediately make a new "game" with the same save slot number as the one you've just deleted.
