ARRRGGGHHH!

Post by Miller »

When playing as the US I like to put a CVE full of fighters into large transport convoys to supply CAP. However I would say 90% of the time when the convoys are attacked the CAP does not even launch! What am I doing wrong? I make sure the carrier is not overloaded and the squadron is set to 100% CAP...

Any ideas[&:]

Hi,

Just guessing mind you, but I think your difficulty lies in the 100% CAP setting as this level automatically becomes Long Range CAP which means you or the squadron commander must set a destination -- which cannot be the same taskforce launching as that launching the aircraft. Try 90% or lower and post the result. [;)]

Furthermore, don't put the CVE or CVEs in the transport TF itself. Form an ACTF (with good AA and ASW ships), have it follow the transport TF, and assign your fighters to 100 percent LRCAP, with the transport TF as the target. That way, you get full benefit of your fighters for both the transport TF and the ACTF (which will dutifully stay in the same hex).

When you get to your target, you need to detach the ACTF and keep it at least one hex away from the port hex you are attacking, because CVs (including CVEs) only launch half the ordinary aircraft on missions when they are in port hexes. This means that you need at least two carriers at this point, one to provide CAP for the ACTF itself and one to provide the LRCAP for your transports.
Put my faith in the people
And the people let me down.
So, I turned the other way,
And I carry on anyhow.
