Not the Place BUT!!!!!!

Post by Titanwarrior89 »

Guys I am a Pacific War Nut! But there is a Great new game out. Nice price, great game and easy on the eyes. You might want to look into it.

"Gates of Troy"[;)]

1. No there not paying me[:D]

2. Put it here because I hang out here and more people than the Troy threads.

3. A very good game if you want a break from Witp once in awhile. It worth the money and more. Plenty of Campaigns Long and short. A big game.[:D]

Oh yea - forget to mention that Gates of Troy is only $19.99 as a digital download. Now you just can't beat that! The price point is an experiement by both us & Matrix to see if lower price points drive up sales, so we get a larger volume but small margin. If it works then we all win, as you get cheaper games and we make more money.

I bought my copy the first day. While it's not a complex involving game like WitP, I find it to be a fun game with just enough historical background added to keep a grizzled old grognard like myself interested. Definitely worth the price of admission.

I'm thinking of forking over the loot just to cast my vote of support for this type of marketing approach. Someone is using their noggin! [:D]

Looks a lot like "Age of Empires" which I cordially loathed! [;)] I doubt I'll buy into this one, even at only around 10 Pounds Sterling. Unless...does it have a "Pause" function, during which you can actually do things? That might make me change my mind, as it makes the difference between a clickfest and a Strategy Game.

I wasnt particular fond of legion or Spartan and this new one looks pretty much the same as both of them, what I would suggest is ROME total war for that particular era, this one rocks, u need a powerful rig to run the game in full mode but its the best real time strategy Ive played so far. There is also a turn base campeign also.

Looks pretty neat to me, I think I may give it a whirl in a week or so when I should have a little more time. I'll admit, if it cost more I probably wouldn't, but for the price I'm willing to try it.

Yeah, it's pretty, but it's all I can do to keep one PBEM and my marriage both running more or less smoothly.

Gates of Troy is a turn based empire building game and has nothing in common with Age of Empires :) We have been compared to total war as you can watch the battles resolve themselves but you cannot contol the troops in real time, only set up formations, orders and deployment and watch them fight it out. Gates of Troy is a much more in deoth campaign game than TW, in the vein of Civilization set in the ancient Greek world. You have research, diplomacy, city development, taxes, population happiness, spying, trade, vassilization, etc etc.

Hope that clears up the myth that it is an RTS. Its not!

Thanks for clearing that up, Ian. Maybe a post-Christmas present to myself could be in order after all! [:)]

I bought it after reading the original post and it is a pleasure to play. Logical display of useful information and a great user interface. WiTP could take lessons in this area.

It's similar to Civilization Series? I need to look into this one. Call me crazy but I like the Civ games.

It's one of our biggest bug bears, people seeing the battles and assuming we are an RTS. They then give the game to be reviewed to their RTS reviews guy and he plays it a bit, gets confused cos its too complicated for him and writes in the major print magazine in the UK "It's S**T" a the tag line. The review then talks constanatly about Medieval Total War and briefly mentions out game in th egaps between. It doesn't actually give any information about the game and its features, just the reviewers opinion that it is the worst game to be released this year.

It happens to some degree with most people, they expect an RYS and when its not they go "oh... wasn't what I was expecting". We try really hard to let people know its not an RTS and went to the point of actually saying this in the title page of the games decription on the web site! When people come to it expecting a TBS they look at it much more favourably.

The quality of journalism in the UK magazines is appauling. How can you swear in the tag line at the top in big letters. Anyone above the age of 15 knows it and doesn't really trust print mags any more. I'm sure there is a market for something just a bit more grown up....

When it first happened we were gutted, but you get used it and just ignore it. After all, most of these journalists are just frustrated cos they have to wite about the games and can't make them ;)

Ok... rant over!

I just got Spartan a few days ago... and it is really kind of cool and neat.
I like it allot, and plan on getting Troy as soon as I can find someone to download it for me to a disk, as all my high tech rich friends are leaving to go on vacation.. hehe

After playing this game so far I think the new Legion game will be awesome. Looking forward to it.[:)]

I am way into one of the long campaigns. With monthly turns you feel as if your in a real campaign(just not years flying by). The turns go quickly as do the years.

Its not a RTS at all. Its turn based and great historical flavor to it. The AI isn't too shabby either. Its taken back about 4 of my cities.

Oh yea "Alex" was born a few months ago-so ill probley have a few problems with him in a few years (playing Rome).[:D]
