Help with StarShatter Controls Desperately Needed!!!

Post by Veldor »

I've downloaded the demo. So far I like what I've seen enough to continue playing the demo to see if I like the game.

BUT..

I CAN'T PLAY THE DEMO!

Because the default controls do not work at all for me and I cannot figure out how to change them.

The up is down, down is up thing which works great with joysticks I dont like for keyboard. Fixed that. Was simple enough.

Now the ctrl key as fire doesnt work for me with one hand on the arrow keys and one hand on the mouse how the heck can I coordinate to also fire?

I have a four button mouse with a scroll wheel. I'd like something like:
MOUSE1 = fire
MOUSE2 = select things
MOUSE3 = secondary fire
MOUSE4 = whatever
SCROLL WHEEL = throttle

Yet when I go to change anything to that all I can do is press keys. How do I make MOUSE1 something?

I'm probably being stupid. Certainly hope I am. Because it would seem silly for such a thing to make me not like a game.

Can anyone help me with this?

I also have a 16 button joystick. I assume that might be easier since I can map buttons to keypresses with the joyutil if the game itself doesn't allow it. Does the game allow it?

I'd still like to get the mouse buttons working first. Then I'll dig up the joystick.

There doesn't seem to be a way to remap the mouse buttons for mouse control mode. They seemed to be fixed as...

Mouse1 : Fire Primary
Mouse2 : Fire Secondary
Mouse3(scrollwheel button for me) : Target Under Reticle
(not sure about 4 and 5 as I don't have the drivers loaded that will let me use them.)

Why would you be using the arrow keys and mouse at the same time though?

I fly with the mouse and use the left/right arrow keys to roll.

I've mapped a multi-button joystick with no problems at all, but I haven't tried more than three buttons on a mouse yet. I'll give it a try with the demo today and see if I can duplicate your problems and find a solution.

Glad you are enjoying the demo otherwise.

Uhm yeah, but thats not true at least in the demo, until you press a magic key (the tilde).

Which basically means it was something stupid like I figured. My screen resolution/the default of the demo was such that the "tutorial info screen" is so small at the bottom that I really didn't notice it. Was busy trying to shoot things so I didn't read it. Noticed it this last time!

Still looks like I am correct and you can't customize mouse controls. But with the ~ thing its close enough to logical that it'll do until I hookup my joystick. Seems like a game meant for a joystick anyway.

Guess I can see though how someone totally new to the game might be frustrated with the controls. Especially those who cannot read like myself. :)

Liking the game though myself, looking forward to discovering more about it...

Im feeling your pain. I cant get the throttle to work at all. I can fire main and 2ndary weapons but its no fun when you arnt going anywhere. Especially true with the 2nd scenario where you practice taking off. I sit on the ground going nowhere. I uninstalled the demo because its a show stopper....

You can always use the keyboard for throttle control and/or set custom keys. I'm still trying to figure out why my scroll wheel wont work for throttle, or how to set it too either in the program or outside of it. I have a standard 4 button Logitech Cordless Optical.

Yeah, Im just using a keyboard and mouse. Ive just got the demo, so if I can get the basics to work, and I like the game, I might go out and get a joystick. According to the documentation, A is the key for thrust, but I dont get any thrust when I press it. So, like I said, its a show stopper.

Just to confirm what you have already figured out - you can't remap the mouse buttons in Starshatter. I'm in the middle of an engine rewrite for the next major patch, so I will look at adding support for mapping more than the standard three button mouse. It's going to be a while before that version is ready for release though...

Regarding the throttle controls, the precedence of inputs is Joystick - Mouse - Keyboard. That means that the game will first look at the joystick throttle, then the mouse scroll wheel, and finally the keyboard (A/Z by default) to determine how to set the throttle. In order to use the keyboard to control the throttle, both the joystick and mouse throttles must be either disabled or set to zero.

If the A/Z keys aren't working, first try disabling the mouse steering with the ~ key. If that doesn't work, send me an email with [Starshatter Support] in the message title (milo@starshatter.com). If disabling the mouse does make the keyboard work, next try it with the mouse enabled. Keep cranking the scrollwheel back towards yourself until the throttle goes all the way to zero. Then try using the keyboard controls to work the throttle. Shift+A is good for this, as it will set the throttle to maximum.

Good luck pilots,

The A-Z thing has always worked for me but I had some problems getting the mouse scroll wheel to operate at all in the game. To be honest I don't know how I fixed it but I have. As for the 4th mouse button (Which Is the thumb button I have set for 'ctrl' to help multi-select things in windows), I just remapped in the game what 'ctrl' does to replace the '~'.

Now I've achieved indirectly everything I wanted with the controls.

Button 1 = Fire Primary
Button 2 = Fire Secondary
Button 3 = Targeting
Button 4 = Mouse Mode Select/Deselect
Scroll Whell = Throttle

The last two are HUGE improvements for me. It probably would still be neat to be able to map actual mouse buttons.

But I am personally Go For Launch, all problems solved!
