Sometimes the Universe just whacks you upside the head

Post by dtravel »

I just had a really creepy moment. Playing my game and just as the latest Chinese assault on Canton comes up in the turn resolution my stereo reaches the track, Scarborough Fair. So I'm listening to Simon & Garfunkel singing about "remember me to one who lives there, she once was a true love of mine" while watching several thousand more troops die in a bloody siege. *twitch*

" A child is born and there is soldiers to kill
And to gather it all
And to fight for a cause
Men long ago forgotten....."

Was that the creepy moment. If so it is very appropriate.

Don't worry, dtravel...

These bytes will revive by themselves. You see, these are self-rising Chinese, like the rising crust pizza.

But let's not joke with serious things. I think we should ask Mike to add a random pop-up in the game, with something like this:

"Why did you kill me?"
"How do you sleep at night?"
"Do you hear my children cry?"
"Guilty!!"

Brrrrr... if these thingie popped up, I wold think 10 times before sending the PoW and Repulse to get sunk by the Japs.

I'm running out of jokes...

Do not mock me, soulless one called rogueusmc. Or else I shall send forth a horde of virii against thee, causing your electronic devices to slowly scroll the names of all the Allied dead in the PTO whilst playing the music.

Oh, here, let me turn the thermostat up. Shall we say 300 F? Warmer now?

To really get the flavor of the song, look up the descant Art Garfunkle sings somewhere, and then remember when it came out.

Well, it's one, two, three
what're we fightin' for?
Don't ask me I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Viet Nam.
And it's five, six, seven -
open up the pearly gates.
Ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee, we're all gonna die.

That was a very strange time in US History.. Specially for those of us in uniform at that time.

Not the song I was listening to. Most people think the title is "Parsley, sage, rosemary and tyme".

It's both. The recording is Simon singing his song interleaved with Garfunkel's song.

And RevRick, for his own reasons, is quoting from the "Country Joe and the Fish" classic, "Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag." In recent years, the daughter of the old jazz composer (whose name escapes me at the moment) of "Muskrat Ramble" sued McDonald for copyright infringement.

Rick, now that we're out of uniform, the world just keeps getting stranger and stranger...

Know what you mean. I'm listening to Madame Butterfly and watching US subs hit tankers. At least they don't burn in the animations. Yet.

Early 60's Folk rock duo. The song in question is Scarborough Fair/Canticle (1966) from the album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. Scarborough Fair is an old English folk tune. The haunting canticle is recited in the background.

THey use a similiar technique in Silent Night/7 oclock news.

Art Garfunkel had a cameo role in 'Catch-22' one of the most evocative anti-war films made.

They had a reunion concert in Toronto about 10 years ago. Simply one of the most enjoyable concerts I'd ever been to. No big stage show -- just good songs.

The Fish of Country Joe and the Fish lives here in Woodland. He is actually the Public Defender. We go see him play down at the Palms, a small theater in an even smaller town.

Silly movie. Catch him as Nicholson's sidekick Sandy in "Carnal Knowledge" with Candy Bergen.

My girlfriend works for the District Attorney's office. She knows the Fish very well also. True, the old Palms closed but there is a new one in Winters. No, it's not the same but you can hear some very good music there in small and upclose setting.

Reminds me of a time a friend and I were playing Starfleet battles and listening to the Heavy Metal soundtrack. We had just fought to a bloody draw with both of us losing 75% of our forces when "Veteran of the psychic wars" comes on. Creepy.

For those of you not familair with the movie:

VETERAN OF THE PSYCHIC WARS by Blue oyster cult

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars
I’ve been living on the edge so long
Where the winds of limbo roar
And I’m young enough to look at
And far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside
I’m not sure if there’s anything left of me

Don’t let these shakes go on
It’s time we had a break from it
It’s time we had some leave
We’ve been living in the flames
We’ve been eating up our brains
Oh, please don’t let theses shakes go on

You ask me why I’m weary, why I can’t speak to you
You blame me for my silence
Say it’s time I changed and grew
But the war’s still going on dear
And there’s no end that I know
And I can’t say if we’re ever...
I can’t say if we’re ever gonna to be free

Don’t let these shakes go on
It’s time we had a break from it
It’s time we had some leave
We’ve been living in the flames
We’ve been eating out our brains
Oh, please don’t let theses shakes go on

You see me now a veteran of a thousand psychic wars (this is the verse that was creepy)
My energy’s spent at last
And my armor is destroyed
I have used up all my weapons and I’m helpless and bereaved
Wounds are all I’m made of
Did I hear you say that this is victory?

Don’t let these shakes go on
It’s time we had a break from it
Send me to the rear
Where the tides of madness swell
And been sliding into hell
Oh, please don’t let shakes go on
Don’t let these shakes go on
Don’t let these shakes go on

Ain't sh1t. Hear now:

This is the song of a common soldier.
The war I fought in has long been over and done.
It was your side that won.
I fought under the sign of the Iron Cross.
The honor and glory with which my life was lost forgotten.
You held history's pen.
No, you won't find my soul down on its knees
Offering up any apologies, my friend.

In your world, I see a million monuments to shame.
The lessons of history ignored like yesterday's rain.
Now that I see what you've let your world turn into
I can't think why anyone would ever fight for you again.
Put my faith in the people
And the people let me down.
So, I turned the other way,
And I carry on anyhow.
