War in the Pacific II

Post by Rossj »

I read the thread "future development plans" with some concern. It looks like the developer is nearing the end of product support. I think that the developer should limit support to fixing known bugs and not put resources into interface or AI improvements.

Instead, start working on WITP II which would fix bugs in this release, make interface improvements and improve the AI (autoconvoys, invasion forces, ground maneuver, etc.).

It shouldn't cost more than $400K-500K for a couple of man years to make these kinds of improvements. Even if there was only a market for 20,000 digital downloads at $40 a pop. That should still turn a profit.

I for one would pay it to keep the best wargame around in a continuous improvement cycle.

Only 2,000 in a world of billions? A big movie might get 10,000,000 viewers in a weekend.

But a movie doesn't demand hundreds of hours of actual THOUGHT to enjoy!
In fact, with many of them, no thought at all is a key to enjoying them.... WITP
has a select and limited audience....The real numbers might be more like 2,000
games sold at $400 a pop.....Or maybe the 2,000 of us should just send them
another $50 right now so they can afford to finish the one we already have?

Frags is probably not too far off the mark. I live in a city of 1.2 million people and, as far as i can see on this forum, I'm the only Western Australian (currently living in Perth) who is into WITP.

I guess you could say I'm one in a million... [8D]

Well it'll need something major to get 2by3 back interested in this game. Anyone who's read the old 2by3 interview on wargarmer.com will know that they were sick to death of WitP in the summer of 2003. Looks like the future of WitP is in the hands of Mike Wood and Mr Frag. Only problem is I don't know how long Mike Wood will be available.

Another observation about movies:

"Master and Commander" was, IMO, a very good movie. But it did so-so in the theatres.

I haven't seen "Troy", but it's earnings were less than spetacular, too. (Unless you guys overwhelming tell me it was a dog, I'll rent it, eventually.)

I am unsure why, but Historical/Period pieces don't do as well as I wish.

The computer game industry considers strategic wargames to be a "niche" market. I guess I fall in the eccentric category. I noticed a lot of "grognards" and history buffs in this forum, but population wise, we are a minority.

Oh, just forget that it is the ridiculous Brad Pitt on the movie (he gets butt naked, by the way, just shake your head and turn it the other way).

Troy is in fact very good - I liked it a lot. It has an excellent script and awesome photography; the characters really have a character of their own; and Wolfgang Petersen connected the movie very well with the original story, through a myriad of details that if you don't pay close attention you will just miss it - that was really smart, because it accomodates both those that know Homer's story and those that don't.

In addition, the combat sequences are fantastic, and very original; it was one of the few movies (the last one was Kill Bill the First) that I watched a second time to pay better attention to the fighting.

I definitely recommend.

By the way, I rented in the same pack a piece of shot called The Bourne Supremacy. I just couldn't watch it 10 minutes, because the shaking camera. How I hate shaking cameras! I now make my life's goal to warn people to not watch or rent that cinematic garbage, and to send a mail to Paul Grengrass telling him to just let the stupid camera still.

I'm running out of jokes...

I know of at least one Guy in Rusia who Bought the game. Also just because you dont see folks posting on this forum, that does not mean they havent bought the game, that is to say many more own the game than post hear, I know of lots of folks who played UV and who are playing WiTP who dont even post hear or do so rarely. I know of entire squads of guys in various flight sims who bought and played UV who never posted on these forums.

I used to be like that. Back when I got UV in 2003, I posted here some, but the UV forums, I didn't like the atitude, so I only swung by the site to see if there were new patches. But with WitP and now working on War Plan Orange, I am here 20 times a day now.

What's wrong with the attitude of the posters to this forum?

No......It was a response to the original poster's claim that they could "sell 20,000
copies of WITP II at $50 a pop".....I was simply an attempt to interject some reality
into his pipedream.
