Yes - in the engineer data screen change "Clear mines in front of unit" to "Lay mines in front of unit" and they will lay mines in the direction you face them. How fast is dependant upon their experience and the situation - if they are pinned or under fire they will not lay them as fast if at all.

Try the tutorial on mines and engineers by Redleg - very informative!

But once laid, they will not remove them - so don't mine yourself in thinking you can just clear your way out.

Can Motorized or Armoured Engineers (infantry not vehicles) lay and clear mines?

The manual says infantry engineers can lay/clear mines, but checking US armoured engineers (infantry engineers in half tracks), they didn't seem to be able to do so (V4.5).

Also self designed motorized engineers didn't seem to be able to lay mines.

My opinion is that engineering remove also mines to "Clear mines in front of unit" command ?

Yes, I think they will too, steel. If you lay mines and then change them to clear mines, or do what I do and bring in other engineers and forget they are set to clear mines, then you will clear your own mines, I believe.

Yes you are right there Steel, and if you put more than 3 engineer units on the same hex then they are able to add/remove trice as fast mines.

Okay...

If you place mines with an engineer unit and then change the unit back to 'will clear mines in front of unit' it will *not* remove those mines it just laid.

Such minefield is apparently considered 'undetected'. If you walk another unit in that minefield so that it's detected, then the engineer unit will remove those mines.

I just tested.

All right, engineers can lay mines. But do they automatically come equipped with said mines, and if so, how many? Or must you purchase mines but not pre-lay them?

"Pre-lay"... now there's a word that just begs for a joke. :D
Retreat is NOT an option.

If I understood first person answering right, they do come equipped.

Yes, they do lay mines without buying them. I don't know how many they come with - normally you really can't lay that many. I did not know they would not remove the same mines, I guess because I've never had reason to do that. But I have moved other engineer units in, forgot that they were set to remove mines, and found out the hard way that they will remove them! :)

In the engineer tutorial you see that no mines are bought yet they lay them all over. You also learn how to blow a bridge, and can practice blowing bunkers.

Engineer will lay mines for as long as they are set to, there is no limit to the number of mine they will lay. The number of mines layed are dependent on experence, suppression status, and length of time. There is no way to stop engineer or any unit from clearing mines in their hex. Engineer will also clear any mines in front of them when set to clear mines. This includes the mines they have layed.
