A little disappointed...

Matrix Games and Simulations Canada combine and completely remake two classic NATO vs. Warsaw Pact wargames into a new classic. Based on the original wargames “Main Battle Tank: North Germany” and “Main Battle Tank: Central Germany”, Flashpoint Germany is a new grand tactical wargame of modern combat. Every aspect of modern grand tactical warfare is included, from advanced armor, air and helicopters to chemical and tactical nuclear weapons. Step into the most dangerous war.. . that never was.

A little disappointed...

Post by Jarhead0331 »

Well...I don't have the game yet, so before you shoot, thats not what I'm disappointed about...

What I am a little put-off about is the fact that it seems that infantry units are not modelled with separate counters of their own. Rather, it seems that they are abstracted with mech infantry counters...

What gives? Is there someplace where I can review the OOB before purchasing the game? Is there an OOB editor so I can add, say Marine Corps Helo assault batallions? Or spec ops/spetznaz units?

I'm just a little surprised that a game that seems to be as detailed as FPG does not specifically model infantry combat...I mean heck...the ads make a big deal about modeling NBC warfare, but it leaves infantry units out? Strikes me as a little odd...even if armor would have ruled a hypothetical East v. West conflict in Europe, Infantry would have played an undeniable major role...

Jarhead, see my thread on the dismounted infantry. Rob makes some good points for tying the infantry to the vehicles. It isn't perfect but it's close and hey, every good game needs an expansion disk!

Jarhead,

Understood, but keep in mind that we're modeling the most mechanized part of this hypothetical conflict - Central and Northern Germany. There are other areas that definitely would have involved separate infantry units to a larger degree and thus necessitate their modeling. For the vast majority of combat in these sectors though, it was mechanized by organization and doctrine. Modeling of air assault, spetsnaz or leg infantry will have to wait for the next in the series - it was not included here by design rather than by omission - but read Rob's post (I believe in the first impressions thread) if you haven't already to get an idea of how mechanized infantry is currently modeled and what our plans are for the future.

Well...can you guys please please hurry up with an expansion or something? Come on...work faster! (j/k) I really really do want to raise hell with infantry though...and please, what of the OOB? Are players/users permitted to fiddle and create?

Jarhead,

Yes, you can edit the OOB and create your own platoons with any composition from the available equipment list. However, note that the current equipment list does not include separate infantry or air assault infantry, but does include mechanized inf (i.e. M113 w/ Squad, M2 w/ Squad, Marder 1 w/ Squad, etc.) and attack and recon helos.

Here's an example of me wantonly fiddling around with the OOB editor, changing a cavalry platoon to include M113 squads and an Apache. In practice, I'd recommend leaving helos in separate units rather than combining them with land vehicles and squads.

- Erik

Mr. Rutins...

Thank you for the quick and informative replies...I won't blow sunshine up your butt and say that i'm happy about the way infantry works in the game the way it is now, but i will say that it looks like you have a good product on your hand nonetheless...Who am I kidding...I'm going to buy it...its inevitable...I just hope that additional theaters with expanded OOBs become available soon...

Thanks again and Semper Fi

Jarhead,

Thanks, enjoy and be assured that we're planning another look at supporting infantry-only combat in the next title.
