Battles In Normandy is the third game in the Decisive Battles game series. Battles in Normandy recreates all aspects of the Normandy campaign, from the landings on the first day to the final climax of the campaign at Falaise. Strategic Studies Group rewrote the Decisive Battles game engine for Battles in Normandy with a host of new special rules for amphibious and airborne operations, plus a huge number of other enhancements.

My only advice is try small scenarios first. I havent played BiN but I have played KP. The small bastogne scenarios for KP helped me understand the game.

also reading the run5 forums, back posts and stuff help too. the KP forums are a big help too considering it's been out for a long time and there is a lot of info on it too. PBEM is also good. And the SSG site has a lot of articles on it too. There is one on beginners strategies for KP which will apply a bit to BiN as well excluding naval aspects and amphibious stuff. Also PBEM with people helps too. As of yet I haven't played BiN but about 2 times simply because I am currently PBEM someone at KP (Korsun Pocket), and screwing around with that a lot still. Same basic engine minus the improvements. I hope this help a little. You can get to SSG site with the awesome articles through link at top of RUN5 forum page.

I agree with Wodin. Start with the small scenarios. I started with Cherbourg which was small and didn't involve an amphibious landing. Then I tried Omaha, followed by Monty's Landing and then Carentan. I think I played each Cherbourg and Omaha both at least twice, maybe three times, and Monty's Landing and Carentan once each. After that I was ready for the big scenario and had a very satisfying time playing the main event the Overlord scenario.

Don't be discouraged. I came out of the tutorials, still feeling rather unsure of how things worked. After playing through Cherbourg several times, I felt a bit better, but still a little unsure of myself. But after playing Omaha, I really got the hang of things. I think I lost Cherbourg and Omaha both at least once.

Now I'm really looking forward to Anzio, Salerno, and Sicily!

What should I be aiming my air inyerdictions at...

There's two things to use interdiction for:

1. Slow down movement of enemy's units,

2. Limit (or block[:D]) supply distribution.

You should note that air interdiction only works on roads (both types). Artillery interdiction works in any hex you place it so use the ships and heavy artillery (look for green disk with artillery piece on it to determine which artillery units are interdiction capable). Finally note that interdiction is NOT cumalative. Overlaying interdictions do not add up to heavy interdiction.

KMG, I just posted a request for PBEM and now I just read your post. We are in the exact same boat. Perhaps you have gained some experience but I think if you play me, it will boost your morale as I am quite sure I will super suck.

But I have HPS wargame experience, so I will get better. But right now, you hopefully would crush me.

Thanks

LOL! If you read history you'll see this exact same quote from Montgomery at Arnhem, Ike at Hurtgen, Rommel at Tunis, Guderian at Moscow. You get the drift!

You're not alone and these guys were paid hundreds of thousands of pounds/marks (actual) in the 40's to get things right.

BiN has the beauty IMO of whilst not following history to the letter, of restricting game-play to historical outcomes. So assuming you haven't done it, my best advice is to first do some basic research as to what the typical 1944 division on each side was capable of achieving given certain terrain and opposition. Then overlay this over a good coverage of the campaign and if you're really hate to see the ending of a movie before you've actually seen the film, hold off on reading about what units went where and did what but just get an overview of what was achieved in general terms and in what time frames. ie how long did it take to reach St Lo?

That'll give you a benchmark to see if you really do "suck" or are just facing the same frustrations of a 1944 command!

And have fun dude [:D]

Re: interdiction, you know the thing I was not cognizant of was that, in playing the 36-turn Operation Normandy scenario, the Allies can interdict all the way down to the bottom of the screen where some reinforcements were coming from. Didn't see that until I played the German side. This is definitely a complex game to understand all the nuances.
