Kamikaze School Drop outs

Post by scout1 »

Playing my filler game (Campaign 1944) while waiting for v1.5, I've noticed some very entertaining performances from my Kamikaze groups.

First, after forming them, I got a chuckle out of putting them on "training". Just seems kind of ironic [;)]

Then as my Allied opponent wandered too close to myy airbase I struck. Net effect was to produce alot of new Allied Aces (or so I thought watching the combat replay). Checking the unit on my nexy turn, to my amazement, my 35 plane group which I thought sacrificed their all, turned up with 5 planes ready for more action and 22 planes needing repairs. Guess this wasn't my most stellar class to graduate Kamikaze school [:'(]

Well duh, if they complete their final exam then they are in smoldering planes on the runway... or is your school's final exam a 20 multiple choice question test? [:D]

FOr that matter, how do you flunk out of kamikaze school? [8D]

Perhaps they should have stopped the promising ones that ended up at the end of the runway as just passed them immediately. These other guys were just in it for the girls [:D]

Hi, If the group was set to receive replacements then what you had was 5 planes that did not fly the prior day and 22 new aircraft.
How many pilots were left?
Were all aircraft ready to fly the first day?
How many ac were shown as lost in intell screen and combat report?

And oh yes there was a school for kamikaze pilots. They were taught how to approach targets, ship recognition, and stuff like that.

Frankly, I can't answe most of those quesitons. it was several truns ago. But I'm interesting concerning your comment about the 22 planes. If these came in from the pool, why would they be damaged from the get-go ?

Ship recognition? By 1945, would that be "If you see a ship, its not ours."

Hi, And you have been playing WITP how long? (Just kidding)

All replacement ac are damaged when they arrive. New aircraft have their guns and stuff installed when they get to the group not at the factory. Plus they just flew in from quite a ways off most of the time. (or they were unloaded from a ship and they are still in the crate) All kinds of equipment were added to aircraft before they flew combat that did not come with the aircraft from the factory and this was after they had upgrades done at other rear area locations before going to the front.

They were taught how to approach targets, ship recognition, and stuff like that.

Kamikaze final written exam :

1. How do you approach the target?
A. Nice slow circles to play in the black puffy stuff around you.
B. Wait for all your friends to go in first, hoping they sink it first.
C. Nose down, point at target.

2. Which ship is the American aircraft carrier?
A. The little ship on the edge of the TF shooting at you.
B. The long skinny ship, bristling with guns shooting at you.
C. The big square ship in the middle shooting at you.

3. What other stuff do you need to know to be a Kamikaze pilot?
A. You should have taken a bigger swig of sake before take-off.
B. She's not going to wait for you.
C. Be sure to take this written exam before the final lab excersize, or you get an incomplete for the course..

Makes one wonder if they could have used these guys in 42 what results would have been? An attack against us fleets from a carrier wing using 25 special fast "unarmed" flyingbombs.. lets say modified Zeros... and some Zeros for cap.. that would really have screwed with the ealrly war results... Lets be glad these came too late to be of any significant threat

Actually, one of the many concerns with the invasion of Japan, is that the Japanese might actually utilize their kamikazes in a more efficient way, against the -transports-.

Kamikazes more often than not attempted to target the American carriers. These were surrounded by the thickest CAP and the greatest AAA concentration. Many kamikazes went down trying to break thru. The Japanese did find that the picket destroyers made for an easier target. So they started going after them. And the concern developed that the next logical target would be the transports. And sinking out 10 fully loaded transports can easily wipe out a division.

Reminds me of the Monty Python sketch about the Queen's Own McKamikaze Highlanders -- their instructor was so good, he never made it out of Tokyo airport!
